Our main goal is to realize our true Self ~ Atman Nityananda

Our main goal is to realize our true Self

You have to become investigators, inventors and innovators in order to be free from your ego and be united with your true Self ( Atman, Consciousness).

The mechanical repetition of practices can not bring significant results.

Intense longing for liberation, regularity, sincerity, tenacity, perseverance, determination, patience, self-confidence, faith, dedication and devotion are necessary to achieve Self-realization.

Death can come in any moment, do not waste your time in trifling ephemeral things, that you will lose soon or later.

Equip your self with all necessary qualities by intense regular sadhana in order to become able to meditate without a break in your own Self (Atman, Consciousness).

Then meditate incessantly until your mind to merge in its source (Consciousness), until the ego to dissolve totally, root and branch. Meditate until to be established in your essence (Consciousness) as the essence and live spontaneously and effortlessly the freedom, peace and bliss eternal!

Be a spiritual hero, walk against the mechanical flow of life and realize that you are God !

Importance of a Spiritual diary by Swami Sivananda

Importance of a Spiritual diary
by Swami Sivananda

The keeping up of a daily spiritual diary is an indispensable requisite. It is certainly of paramount importance. Those who are already in the habit of keeping it know its incalculable advantages. A diary is a whip for goading the mind towards righteousness and God. The diary is your teacher and guide. It is the eye-opener. It will help you to destroy all your evil qualities and to be regular in your spiritual practices. It shows the way to freedom and Eternal Bliss. Those who wish to evolve rapidly must keep a daily record of their actions. If you regularly maintain a diary, you will get solace, peace of mind and quick progress in the spiritual path. Maintain daily diary and realise the marvellous results!

Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi always advised his students to keep a daily diary. I am always keen on this point. My students keep five different kinds of notebooks. They write their Ishta Mantra in a notebook for one hour daily observing the vow of silence. There is a great deal of concentration in writing a Mantra in a notebook. It forms Japa also at the same time. They keep daily record of their actions. They keep a notebook for synonyms. Whenever they come across difficult words, they write down in the notebook those words with their synonyms. They at once refer to the dictionary. This gives a fund of knowledge. They will have a rich vocabulary of words. They can have good command of the language. Every week they go through their notebooks very carefully. They keep another notebook wherein they take down important points of what they read daily. They note down in another notebook my practical instructions which I give them casually. This develops their Manana Sakti or power of reflection. He who regulates his life on the above lines is sure to become a great man in a short time. There is no doubt of this. Do it practically and see how you grow.

All great men of the world keep diaries. The life of Benjamin Franklin is known to you all. He kept a daily diary. He noted down the number of untruths and wrong actions for which he was responsible during the course of the day. In course of time he became a perfect man. He had perfect control over his mind.

You will have to record in your diary the time you get up from the bed in the morning and retire to bed, the hours of sleep, the study of religious books, the number of Malas of Japa, how many hours you meditate daily, the nature of mistake you committed and the self-punishment you have given to rectify yourself in the form of fasting or increase in the number of Malas of Japa, etc., the lies you have uttered in the course of the day, how many times you became angry and how long it lasted, how many hours you spent in selfless service, how many times passion troubled you and how long it lasted, and the methods you adopted in checking it, the number of Pranayamas you did daily, how long you have practised Asanas and how many hours you have wasted in useless company and talk, etc.

You can add also how many hours did you observe Mouna *Silencce) daily. Did you keep vigils on Sivaratri, Sri Krishna Janmashtami or any other days? How many days did you fast? How many times you failed in the control of evil habits? Prepare a similar diary as shown elsewhere in this book and verify whether you are really progressing. Please send a copy of the diary to me every month. Just keep the diary for six months and then watch the results. If you want quick spiritual attainments, you should never neglect to record everything in your diary. To change the worldly nature it needs rigorous Sadhana. You should not hide your weaknesses and defects while making out daily diaries. It is only to correct and mould oneself, to purge out all weaknesses, defects and errors, to develop the divine nature and to attain Self-realisation that this diary is maintained. If the aspirant is sincere in his jottings the diary itself will become his silent master which will open his eyes and direct him Godward. All people keep Dhobi's diary and milk diary, but alas, they have neglected to keep up the most important diary i.e., Spiritual Diary which will help to correct one's mistakes and to attain quickly Self-realisation or the final beatitude of life.

A big thief is hiding himself in your brain. He has snatched away your Atmic pearl. He is giving you immense worries and troubles. He is deluding you. The thief is your mind. You must not be lenient towards him. You must crush him. You must kill him ruthlessly. There is no other sword sharper than this diary to kill him. It checks his happy-go-lucky ways and destroys him eventually. All your daily mistakes will be corrected if you maintain daily spiritual diary. A good time will come when you will be entirely free from anger, untruth, lust, etc. You will become a perfect man.

Your father and mother gave you this body. They gave you food and clothing. But this diary is superior to your parents. It shows the way to freedom and eternal bliss. It is your Guru. Turn the pages of your diary once a week. If you can record your actions every hour, your growth will be very rapid. Happy is the man who keeps a daily diary because he is very near to God. He has a strong will and is free from defects and mistakes.

By keeping daily diary you can then and there rectify your mistakes. You can do more Sadhana and evolve quickly. There is no other better friend and more faithful teacher or Guru than your diary. It will teach you the value of time. At the end of every month calculate the total number of hours you have spent in Japa, study of religious books, Pranayama, Asanas, sleep, etc. Then you will be able to know how much time you are spending for religious purposes. You have got every chance to increase the period of Japa, meditation, etc., gradually. If you maintain a daily diary properly without any fault in any of the items you will not like to waste even a single minute unnecessarily. Then alone you will understand the value of time and how it slips away.

om! WHAT IS ATTACHMENT ? ~ Atman Nityananda

WHAT IS ATTACHMENT?

"Know thou Rajas to be of the nature of passion, the source of thirst (for sensual enjoyment) and attachment; it binds fast, O Arjuna, the embodied one by attachment to action"
 ~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.XIV  V.7

"Attachment is due to infatuation. It is the offspring of the quality of Rajas. Detachment is born of Sattva. Attachment is born of ignorance, selfishness and passion and brings with it death; detachment is wisdom and brings with it freedom."
 ~  Swami Sivananda

Attachment has two aspects.

A. My mind is attached to sense objects, means that my mind is attracted by the sense objects and is occupied mostly by thoughts about sense objects (includes persons). Our egoic self (which has as its seat in the manas* and senses) schemes and plans what will get or what will experience if gets this or that object. Thinks about the qualities of objects, their frame, color, taste etc. It thinks and plans how to obtain the objects that considers beneficial for its comfort, fame, pleasure and happiness.

"When a man thinks of the objects, attachment to them arises; from attachment desire is born; from desire anger arises. From anger comes delusion; from delusion the loss of memory; from loss of memory the destruction of discrimination; from the destruction of discrimination he perishes."
~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.II  V.62.63

"That pleasure which arises from the contact of the sense-organs with the objects, which is at first like nectar and in the end like poison—that is declared to be Rajasic."
~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.XVIII  V.38

By thinking  about the sense objects identification and attachment is born together with fascination, from fascination desire is born and from desire like-dislike, attraction-aversion, anger, fear and depression and all other egoic tendencies are born. From desire and anger mostly but also from all other egoic tendencies (fear, jealousy, greed, pride, vanity, arrogance, lasciviousness etc.) as well, our intelligence is obscured and clouded and thus we fail to discriminate between the Self and the non self, the true and the false, the right and wrong.

"That by which one incorrectly understands Dharma and Adharma, and also what ought to be done and what ought not to be done—that intellect, O Arjuna, is Rajasic"

Commentary of Swami Sivananda: That which is ordained in the scriptures is Dharma. That which hurls you into the abyss of ignorance is Adharma. The Rajasic intellect is not able to distinguish between righteous and unrighteous actions.

 ~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.XVIII  V.31

B. My mind is attached to an object or a person means that my happiness, security, worthiness and well being is depended on this object or person. It means that I cannot live without this object without to suffer. Even to think that I could lose this object or this person that I am attached, makes me suffer.

"Passionate, desiring to obtain the rewards of actions, cruel, greedy, impure, moved by joy and sorrow, such an agent is said to be Rajasic."
~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.XVIII  V.26

The fundamental attachments are with our body and mind (opinions, beliefs, concepts, ideas, emotions, etc.). Most people on earth are attached to their bodies and their minds and suffer due to these attachments.

Attachments are related to pleasure, comfort, happiness, security, prestige, fame, self-esteem and self-image.

We become attached to things that give us pleasure, comfort, make us feel  happy, make us feel secure, worthy, accepted, special. We develop aversion about things or persons that make us experience pain, make us feel insecure, uncomfortable, unworthy, inferior, rejected etc.

Attachment is related to desire mechanism and ego. The attachment is as strong as our desire and our ego are.

In order to be free from attachments we must be free from desire and ego. As long as desire exist in us, will exist ego and attachments as well.

The root cause of attachments and desires are the ignorance of our true nature.. We can free ourselves from ego, desires and attachments by meditating constantly in our essence within. Profound constant meditation is possible only for a pure sattvic mind.

"He who is free from attachment, non-egoistic, endowed with firmness and enthusiasm and unaffected by success or failure, is called Sattvic.
~ Bhagavad Gita Ch.XVIII  V.26

We need a pure sattvic mind, right knowledge about the nature of our true Self, to contemplate and reflect on what we have learned about the Self and then meditate constantly until our mind merges in the Self. When this will happen, our ego, desires and attachments which already have been made weak by prolonged spiritual sadhana and austerities will be dissolved totally and for ever. Free from ego, attachments and desires we will be free from all suffering and will enjoy, the peace, freedom and bliss of our eternal Self!

NOTE:
manas*:

ANTAHKARANA - MIND / The fourfold internal organ

The Antahkarana or Mind is made of the five subtle elements and by nature is sattvic (read about gunas). But due to ignorance of our true nature and the identification with the objects of senses and the development of the ego our mind is 'contaminated' by the rajas and tamas gunas. The purpose of spiritual practice is to weed out the rajas and tamas gunas from the mind and bring it back to its sattvic state.

ANTAHKARANA has four aspects:
  1.     Manas (mind)
  2.     Buddhi (Intellect, Intelligence)
  3.     Ahamkara (Ego, the illusory identity)
  4.     Chita-Chitta (subconscious, memory, general field of the mind).

3. Manas (The external mind)

It has various functions. It makes really a great job. Coordinates the operation of the five senses of knowledge with the five senses of action. Coordinates the volitional body movements with the five senses. With the manas are related, the ego, the lower emotions and the mechanical thinking. The manas  brings through the senses the sensory information from the world in the buddhi (intellect-intelligence) and consciousness, and executes the commands that gets from the buddhi. Unfortunately due to the lower or vital ego the manas dysfunctions; operates under the unconscious mechanical impulses of the lower ego. This is the main cause of our imbalances (physical, emotional.mental, intellectual), disequilibrium, diseases and suffering.

The purpose of spiritual practice in relation with the manas is to purify the mind (manas), and put it under the control and service of the intelligence (buddhi) and the Consciousness. The main ways to purify the mind is to control the senses, to be detached from the manas, to feed the manas with sattvic impressions, eat sattvic food, to keep sattvic relations and do spiritual practices, like japa nama, japa mantra, kirtan, concentration, meditation, pranayama etc.
