Self-realization and rebirth of water and spirit

Spirituality is a way of living and a process by which we attain Self-realization or Liberation. By regular, diligent and sincere practice we aim to purify our heart and mind and by incessant practice of meditation to merge the pure mind completely in its source (Consciousness, Brahman).

What is to be born of water and spirit?

What really is to be born of water

To "be born of water" is related to the transformation of sexual energy. Sexual energy is related to the second major chakra, named Svadhisthana, (the element of this chakra is the water) and the first chakra, named Muladhara in which lies dormant the cosmic energy in the form of serpentine power or coiled energy called Kundalini Shakti. Due to relation of sexual energy with the Svadhisthana chakra which is related with the element of water, Jesus spoke in a symbolic way about the birth of water; incomprehensible for the majority but known to all those that know the esoteric human psychology and the spiritual process.

 The sexual energy by spiritual practices is transformed into spiritual energy and causes the following effects:

1. First is transformed into ojas and tejas* which are necessary to be developed the superior capabilities of the mind and achieve the deepest Samadhi without which the ego cannot be dissolved completely.
2. Second builds up the sheaths or bodies of light that are the true and imperishable bodies of the Soul.
3. Awaken the Sakti-kundalini, which awakens the superior capabilities of the seven major chakras which are positioned along the spine.

NOTE: Tejas*  (It is what makes the mind and the face of the enlightened ones to shine. That’s why in the sacred art of the Christian churches, (oriental and Western,) they have designed a gold (yellow or white) halo around the head of saints and Christ.

 Shakti Kundalini cannot be awakened if we have not purified the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna Nadis; this purification is aligned with the purification of the mind which is possible by several practices and which presupposes the dissolution of the egoic tendencies (anger, lust, gluttony, pride, greed, fear, impatience, jealousy, arrogance, vanity, etc.) .

How awakens the Kundalini

Before the awakening the Kundalini is necessary to have Deha Suddhi (purity of body), Nadi Suddhi (purification of energy astral channels), Manas Suddhi (purity of mind), Buddhi Suddhi (purity of intellect), Bhuta Suddhi (purification of elements) and Adhara Suddhi (purification of the base of the spine).

If you have proper purification (Suddhi), perfection (Siddhi), will come by itself. Perfection (Siddhi) is not possible without purification (Suddhi).

One has to give up all desires and possess Vairaya (dispassion), before attempting to awaken the Kundalini. If a person full of impurities in his mind awakens the Shakti with extreme effort through asanas, mudras and pranayamas, he will ‘break his legs’and will have a fall. It will not be able to climb the ladder of yoga. That is the main reason why people leave the spiritual path or develop certain physical deformities. There is nothing wrong in Yoga. But achieve purity first, a full knowledge of the Sadhana, a suitable guide, and a steady and gradual practice.

Kundalini is awakened through pranayama, asanas and mudras by Hatha yogis, through concentration by raja yogis, through devotion and perfect self-surrender by bhaktas or devotees; by analytical will by jnanis; by repetition of the mantra and the grace of a true master.

The awakening of the Kundalini is not easy, as you can imagine. It is extremely difficult.

When all desires vanish when the mind becomes pure when all the senses are bowed down, you get firmness of mind to a considerable degree, and finally the idea of ​​egoism (Iness) and mine (Mineness)  fade, then the Kundalini is then awakened by itself. Only then, it is beneficial its awakening.


However the awakening of Kundalini Shakti for aspirants of Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga it doesn’t happen by specific practices that are essential for aspirants of Tantra yoga or Kundalini yoga. For the aspirants of Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga the purification nsdis and the mind happen by different practices and processes than those that follow the aspirants of Tantra and Hatha Yoga. Yet, it is true that there are qualities such as vairagya (dispassion) that the aspirants of all kind of yogas  have to develop in a very high level, although they develop it (the dispassion) by different processes. The Bhaktas by love and devotion to God, the Jnanis by discernment and reasoning sama and dama and Hatha yogis by mantras, controling the breath, the prana and the sexual energy.

Since this process of purification and control of the mind is very difficult and exigent,  Swami Sivananda (and me also from my own experience)  proposes the yoga of synthesis which includes practices and methods of all major yogas; each one according to his inclination, experience, mental and emotional capacities and destiny will have one or two of the yogas as the main ones in his sadhana, that is, he will spend more time practicing techniques of his favourite yoga. Personally I follow a sadhana based on Jnana yoga and Bhakti yoga but I Include in my sadhana other practices also.

Conclusion: To be born of water means the transformation of sexual energy and the awakening of kundalini-Shakti.

Being born of the spirit


To be born of the Spirit happens by the transformation of the mind into consciousness through deep meditation to its source Consciousness or Spirit (also Brahman, God, name it as you like). When the pure (by prolonged sadhana) mind meditates continuously and deeply in its source, Consciousness, at the end it melts in it and becomes identical with Consciousness. This is the birth of the Spirit.

This merging of the mind in Consciousness is possible only to a mind that has become pure sattvic through spiritual practices for a long time (and many lives of preparation in the past lives) a mind which it is enriched by ojas and tejas and empowered by the transformed sexual energy. The highest samadhis are possible only to a mind that is pure and is impregnated with Ojas and tejas. Without deep Nirvikalpa samadhi the fusion of the mind in consciousness it is impossible. Without the merging of the mind in consciousness the dissolution of ego and the transformation of mind as consciousness are impossible; and thus liberation is impossible as well.

Thus the purification of the mind that is related with the elimination of the egoic tendencies precedes of the new born of water and Spirit. Without the elimination of the egoic tendencies, and especially the sexual lust, the sexual energy the mind and the prana cannot become pure and thus cannot happen the awaken of kundalini as well as the mind cannot meditate deeply and merge in the Spirit. Without dying there is no rebirth of water and the Spirit, this is what all great masters told us in various ways.

The two 'births´ of water and spirit are not two different processes, but an integral process that happens from above and below at the same time. We try to purify the mind and vital and sexual energies by several practices in order to awaken the latent capacities of the mind and at the same time by meditation to connect our mind with its source (God, Consciousness, Brahman). This process, that I call it ´The double process´ ends with the Death (dissolution) of the ego and the clear or complerte realization that we are Consciousness. This is what we call as Self-realization, Liberation, Enlightenment or Divinization of the human being.

The value of semen

My dear brothers! The vital energy, the Veerya that supports your life, which is the Prana of Pranas, which shines in your sparkling eyes, which beams in your shining cheeks, is a great treasure for you. Remember this point well. Veerya is the quintessence of blood. One drop of semen is manufactured out of forty drops of blood (Ayurveda says out of 80 to 100 drops of blood). Mark here how valuable this fluid is! 

A tree draws the essence or Rasa from the earth. This essence is circulated throughout the tree, its twigs, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. The shining colours and life in the leaves, flowers and fruits are due to this Rasa. Similarly, the Veerya that is manufactured by the cells of the testes out of blood gives colour and vitality to the human body and its different organs. 

How is manufactured the semen?

According to Ayurveda, semen is the last Dhatu that is formed out of food. Out of food is manufactured chyle. Out of chyle comes blood. Out of blood comes flesh. Out of flesh comes fat. Out of fat comes bone. Out of bone comes marrow. Out of marrow comes semen. These are the Sapta Dhatus or the seven Dhatus that support this life and body. Mark here how precious is semen! It is the last essence. It is the Essence of essences. The Veerya comes out of the very marrow that lies concealed inside the bones. 

Semen nourishes the physical body, the heart and the intellect. 

There are three divisions in each Dhatu. Semen nourishes the physical body, the heart and the intellect. Only that man who uses the physical body, the heart and the intellect can have perfect Brahmacharya. A wrestler who uses his physical body only, but keeps the intellect and the heart undeveloped, cannot expect to have full Brahmacharya. He can have Brahmacharya of the body only, but not of the mind and the heart. The semen that belongs to the heart and the mind will certainly flow out. If an aspirant does only Japa and meditation, if he does not develop the heart, and if he does not practice physical exercise, he will have only mental Brahmacharya. The portion of the semen, which goes to nourish the heart and the body, will flow out. 

But an advanced Yogi who dives deep in meditation will have full Brahmacharya even if he does not take physical exercise. 

Semen is the quintessence of food or blood. One drop of semen in manufactured out of forty drops of blood according to modern medical science. According to Ayurveda, it is elaborated out of eighty drops of blood. The two testes or seeds that are located in the scrotal bag are called secretory glands. The cells of these testes have been endowed with the peculiar property of secreting semen from the blood. Just as bees collect honey in the honeycomb drop by drop, so also, the cells of the testes collect semen drop by drop from the blood. Then this fluid is taken by the two ducts or tubes to the vesiculae seminalis. Under excitement, it is thrown out by special ducts, called ejaculatory ducts, into the urethra where it is mixed with the prostatic juice. 

Semen is found in a subtle state in all the cells of the body. Just as sugar is all-pervading in the sugar-cane, butter in milk, so also, semen is pervading the whole body. Just as the butter milk is thin after the butter is removed, so also, semen is thinned by its wastage. The more the wastage of semen the more is the weakness. 

In the Yoga Sastras it is said:
 "Maranam Bindu Patanat, Jivanam Bindu Rakshanat".  
Falling of semen brings death; preservation of semen gives life. 

Semen is the real vitality in men. It is the hidden treasure in man. It imparts Brahma-Tejas to the face and strength to the intellect. 

Mind, Prana and Veerya (sexual energy)

Mind, Prana and Veerya are the three links of one chain. They are the three pillars of the edifice of Jivatma. Destroy one pillar—mind, Prana or Veerya—and the whole building will fall to pieces. 

Mind, Prana and Veerya are one. By controlling the mind, you can control Prana and semen. By controlling Prana you can control the mind and semen. By controlling semen, you can control the mind and Prana. 

Mind, Prana and Veerya are under the one Sambandha or connection or circuit. If the mind is controlled, Prana and Veerya are controlled automatically. He who suspends or restrains Prana restrains also the working of the mind and the movement of the Veerya. Again, if the Veerya is controlled, and if it is made to flow upwards into the brain by pure thoughts and the practice of Viparita Karani Mudras such as Sarvangasana and Sirshasana and Pranayama, the mind and the Prana are automatically controlled. 

The mind is set in motion or rendered active by two things—the vibration of Prana and the Vasanas or subtle desires. Where the mind is absorbed, there the Prana is restrained; and where the Prana is fixed, there the mind also is absorbed. Mind and Prana are intimate companions, like a man and his shadow. If the mind and the Prana are not restrained, all the organs of sensation and action keep actively engaged in their respective functions. 

When a man is excited by passion, the Prana is set in motion. Then the whole body obeys the dictate of the mind just as a soldier obeys the command of his commander. The vital air or Prana moves the internal sap or semen. The semen is put into motion. It falls downwards, just as the clouds burst into rain water, just as the fruits, flowers and leaves of the trees drop down by the force of the blowing winds. 

If the Veerya is lost, Prana gets unsteady. Prana is agitated. The man becomes nervous. Then the mind also cannot work properly. The man becomes fickle-minded. There is mental weakness. 

If the Prana is rendered steady, the mind also becomes steady. If the Veerya is steady, the mind also is steady. If the Veerya is steady, the mind also is steady. If the Drishti or vision is steady, the mind also becomes steady. Therefore, control the Prana, the Veerya and the Drishti. 

God is Rasa. Raso Vai Sah. Rasa is Veerya, the vital fluid or semen. You can get eternal bliss by the attainment of Rasa or Veerya only. Rasohyevayam Labdhva Anandi Bhavati. 

Grasp fully the importance and value of this vital essence of life. Veerya is all power. Veerya is all money. Veerya is God. Veerya is Sita. Veerya is Radha. Veerya is Durga. Veerya is God in motion. Veerya is dynamic Will. Veerya is Atma-Bal. Veerya is God’s Vibhuti.

The Lord says in the Gita: "Paurusham Nrishu. I am the seed or virility in men".

Veerya is the essence of life, thought, intelligence and consciousness. Therefore, preserve this vital fluid very, very carefully, my dear readers!

NOTE:
Female  sexual energy: Although Swami Sivananda in his works speaks mostly about men and the transformation of semen to ojas, I would like to mention here that the same applies to women as well. The ojas in women is stored into the vaginal secretions, which are discarded by the orgasmic spasms. Sexual energy is most precious of all because our vitality, creativity and our mental and emotional strength depend on the quality and the vigor of sexual energy. Dr. David Frawley mention in his books about Ayurveda that the sexual tissues are also the containers of tejas and prana too.

Since God is verily the Self, love of the Self is love of the God and that is bhakti. Jnana and Bhakti are thus one and the same.

Really there are only two methods, Self-Enquiry (Vichara) and devotion (Bhakti). One leads to the other. 

A devotee concentrates on God. A seeker, follower of the Jnana-marga seeks the Self. The practice is equally difficult for both.

Self-enquiry is possible for mature minds, not for immature ones.

For the immature ones, japa nama, worship of images, pranayama, visualizing a pillar of light and similar yogic and spiritual and religious practices have been prescribed.

Service, like prayers, japa and even businesss done in God’s name, lead to the highest Goal; Self-realization.

Complete effacement of the ego is necessary to conquer destiny, whether you achieve this effacement through Self enquiry or through bhakti-marga.

God is Love

God is Truth. God is love. Speak the Truth. Love everyone. You will realise Him quickly. Have Satsanga with Sadhus, Sannyasins and Bhaktas. This alone can give you Viveka, Vairagya, spiritual strength and peace of mind. There is no other way. Hunt out for Sadhus. They are everywhere. Sincerity and earnestness are needed in you. They are ever ready to receive you lovingly with outstretched hands.

By Satsanga your mind will be saturated as sugar in water with thoughts of God, with Divine Glory, Divine Presence, with sublime soul-awakening spiritual thoughts. Then only will you be established in the Divine consciousness always. Then you can attain Self-realisation within the time taken for the squeezing of a flower.

God's name is verily Omnipotent

Name of the Lord is a potent unfailing antidote for those who are bitten by the serpent of Samsara. It is a nectar (Amrita) that can confer immortality and perennial Peace. Yama (god of death) is terribly afraid of those who repeat the names of the Lord. He cannot approach them. Repeat the name of the Lord always and attain the fearless state.

May the Lord guide you in all your activities. May He enlighten your path enabling you to achieve the goal of life, viz., Self-realisation, your birthright. May you live drowned in a life of joy, bliss and prosperity!

Do Kirtan Regularly

Sankirtan is food for the mind and the Soul. Sankirtan is a Divine tonic. Sankirtan is a potent healing balm for the shattered nerves. Sankirtan is a celestial nectar. Drink the nectar daily by doing Sankirtan in Brahmamuhurta and night. 

The strength and intensity of devotion depends upon the completeness of the self-surrender and sacrifice. 

As the vast majority of persons keep certain subtle desires for secret gratifications, they do not grow in devotion. The two obstacles to self-surrender are desire and egoism.

Sing the Lord’s Glory

Worship the Lord at all times with all your heart and with all your mind. Sing His glory. Remember His name always. All miseries will come to an end. Your heart will be purified. The Lord will soon reveal Himself to you. You will feel His Presence. 

Pray fervently to the Lord for the descent of the Divine Light. Crave for His Mercy. Weep for His separation on account of Viraha. Yearn for communion with Him. Melt the mind in the Agni of Divine Love. Burn the body in the fire of devotion. Drink the honey of Prem. Get yourself intoxicated with the wine of Divine Love. Attain immortality and eternal Bliss.

Develop Devotion

Control your mind, speech and actions. Speak the truth. Be calm. Discipline the senses. Hear, recite, sing and meditate on the deeds, qualities and Avataras of Hari. 

Have exclusive devotion to the Lord. Give your whole mind to Him. Do not allow any outside worldly impressions wherein there is an iota of selfish desire to enter into your subconscious mind. Learn how to sing, interchange devotion and love each other and speak to each other of the glory of the Lord, till your hairs stand on end and sing and dance till you lose yourself in devout contemplation.

Realise the Lord through Prem

Lord Shiva is the Supreme Soul, the Antaryamin, the protector of all beings. He is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent. He was never born. He never died. 

If you are a true seeker of God, you will meet Him within a moment. Remember Him always. Live by His name. Sing His praises. Search for Him in your heart of hearts. Learn from the devotees the way to love and serve Him, the support of your soul, the only sovereign of the whole world, the Indweller of your heart and the inner Ruler. 

May you remember the Holy names of the Lord at all times and live in an ocean of divine ecstasy and divine communion! May prosperity attend on you for ever.

The crystallization of ego in our psyche

The ego has been crystallized in the psych of human beings from the symbolic time of Adam and Eve thousands years ago and through the aeons has become more complicated and strong. 

Paramahansa Yogananda, Samael Aun Weor and George Ivanovich Gurdieff mention in their books that the sexual behavior was the cause of the development of ego.

 I post here some interested extracts of these masters about the crystallization of the ego in our psych.

… Adam fell on account of one loose moment. Eve tempted on account of one desire. The forbidden fruit will ripen before the human eyes in no time. …Beware of Maya and its meshes. The chains of gold can be cut asunder, but not the silken meshes of Maya. A single unguarded moment is sufficient to capsize the whole casket of pearls, down into the dark abyss of passion and lust.

Desire in the mind is the real impurity. Sexual desire, vulgar attraction for the opposite sex, is the greatest impurity. This causes the real bondage.”

“At the beginning of the cycle of manifested creation, God materialized all froms by direct, special, creative command: the “Word” or cosmic creative vibration of Aum (Om), with its manifest powers of creation, preservation and dissolution. God endowed man, made in His omnipotent image, with this same creative power.

But Adam and Eve (symbolic of the first pairs of human beings), yielding to touch-temptation, lost the power of “immaculate creation” by which they had been able to clothe all their mental pictures with energy and life, thus materializing children from the ether (bringing them into manifestation from the ideational world), even as gods.

Man and woman, instead of seeking emancipation in God through soul unity, sought satisfaction through the flesh. 

The seed of the original error of “Adam and Eve” remains in all human beings as the first temptation of the flesh against the immaculate laws of Spirit(“touch not the tree in the center of the garden!”). Each individual since that dim era has had to engage his soul in battle with the cosmically present temptation of sex. The creator in man has become a dictatorial creature.

The sex impulse is the single most physically magnetic power that pulls the life and consciousness down from Spirit in the higher centers in the brain, out through the coccygeal center into matter and body consciousness. The beginner in yoga meditation experiences all too definitely how grounded he is by the stubborn attachment of his life and energy to the body, sometimes without realizing that it is his uncontrolled thoughts and acts of sex that are primarily responsible for his earthbound condition.”

I also knew the last times of the third Root Race. I lived in that epoch, which is cited in Genesis as being that ancient age in which Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden.

In those times, humanity had already divided themselves into opposite sexes. The sexual act was then a sacrament which was only performed inside of the temples.

In certain lunar epochs, the Lemurian tribes were performing long travels. They were departing on pilgrimages towards the holy places, with the purpose of multiplying the specie (let us recall our honeymoon trips).

We, all the Lemurians, were children born from will power and yoga. Maithuna (sexual tantra: sexual union without orgasm) was what we performed during the copulation, and no one was committing the error of ejaculating the entity of semen.

The human seed always passed into the womb without the spilling of semen being necessary. The multiple combinations of this infinite substance are marvelous.

The king and queen monarchs were sexually united before the very altar of the temple, and the multitudes were performing the copulation inside the sacred precinct and in the rocky patios filled with mysterious hieroglyphics.

The holy Gods were wisely directing those mystical ceremonies, which were indispensable for the reproduction of the human specie. No one was thinking in perversity, since the pluralized ‘I’ was not born yet.

I was living in the country with my tribe, far away from those walled cyclopean cities. We were abiding in a big cabin, cottage or hut. Close to our rounded palm roofed residence, I remember with entire clarity that there was a military base where the warriors of our tribe were meeting.

It happened that on a certain night, all of us, fascinated by a strange Luciferic power, resolved to perform the sexual act out of the temple. Thus, we, each of the couples delivered ourselves to lust.

Next day, in the morning, as if nothing had happened, we had the daring, the shame, the insolence, the impudence to present ourselves as usual in the temple. However, something unexpected and terrible happened.

All of us saw a God of Justice, a great Master, dressed with a day-breaking and immaculate sacerdotal vesture. With a flaming sword which he was turning in every way to threaten us, he said,: “Get out, you unworthy!” It is clear that we then fled terrorized.

Obviously, this event was repeated in all the corners of the enormous continent Mu. This is how the humanity Adam- Eve was cast out from the Garden of Eden. Following this event, which is registered in the Genesis of all religions, horrifying epilogues were occurring. Millions of human creatures were developing the abominable Kundartiguador organ when they started to mix Magic with fornication...

"So, my boy, in view of this, the Most High Commission decided, among other things, to implant provisionally in the common presence of the three-brained beings there a special organ (kundabuffer) with properties that, first, would make them perceive reality 'upside down' and, second, would cause every repeated impression from the outside to crystallize in them data that engender factors for evoking sensations of 'pleasure' and 'enjoyment.

In another point George Ivanovich Gurdieff says:

"Before continuing to relate how all this occurred, I must tell you in a little more detail about that sacred substance which is the final result of the evolving transformations of every kind of being-food and is formed in the presence of every being without distinction of 'brain system ' This sacred substance, elaborated in the presence of beings of every kind, is almost everywhere called 'exioëhary,' but your favorites on the planet Earth call it 'sperm.

"Through the all-gracious foresight and command of our Common Father Creator and according to the actualization of Great Nature, this sacred substance (semen) arises in the presence of all beings, without distinction of brain system or exterior coating, in order that by its means they may consciously or automatically fulfill that part of their being-duty which consists in the continuation of their species. But in the presence of three-brained beings it also arises in order that they may consciously transform it for coating their higher being-bodies for their own being.

"Before the second transapalnian perturbation there, which the contemporary three-brained beings refer to as the 'loss of the continent of Atlantis,' in the period when various consequences of the properties ofthe organ kundabuffer had already begun to be crystallized in their presence, a being-impulse was gradually formed in them which later became predominant.

"This impulse is now called 'pleasure', and in order to satisfy it they were already beginning to exist in a manner unbecoming to three-centered beings, that is to say, most of them gradually began to remove this sacred being-substance from themselves for the satisfaction of this impulse alone.

"Well, my boy, from then onmost of the three-brained beings of the planet Earth were not content to carry out the process of the removal of this substance, which is continuously elaborated in them, only at those periods normally established by Great Nature for beings in accordance with their organization, for the purpose of the continuation of their species

Owing to this, and also to the fact that most of them had ceased to utilize this substance consciously for coating their higher being-bodies, it came about that when they did not remove it from themselves in ways that by then had become mechanical, they naturally experienced a sensation called 'sirklinimana,' a state they describe as 'feeling out of sorts,' and which is invariably accompanied by what is called 'mechanical suffering.

COMMENTARY

Ego has been created by the externalization of sexual energy due to sexual union with orgasm. When sexual energy is externalized then, the prana, the mind and the awareness flow outward towards the physical body and the sense objects. This way identification with the body (the sense the body is ‘me’) and the sense objects (‘Mineness’) takes place.

The pleasure that the mind experiences due to orgasm becomes lust and passion that are imprinted and accumulated in the energy body and in the mind. The ego which basically is made of pleasure and lust demands to experience the pleasure more strongly after every pleasurable experience.Thus desire is developed which gradually from desire (desire is lust to possess an object and have pleasure) for sex modifies as desire for eating and drinking, desire for fame, power etc.

It is not a coincidence that the sexual degeneration we see today all over the world and the growth of ego go together.

Conclusion: The ego has been created by modification of sexual energy

The development of the ego had as a consequence the disorientation of the intellect which became more and more clouded. Thus the intellect instead of reflecting the consciousness and be an instrument of the divine will has become the servant of the ego which seeks pleasures in the illusory sense objects. Together with desire and ego-sense have been developed the side effects of pleasure and desire too. These are innumerable but the main are the anger, fear, aggressiveness, separation, sadness, sorrow, depression, selfishness, irritability, etc. 

Birth after birth, generation after generation the ego gradually modifies in innumerable ways and we can see today how much the ego has become complicated after thousands of years of its development. The majority of earthlings nowadays are occupied by this virus of ego. They have become problematic insane entities who create great amount of suffering for themselves and their fellows. Collectively the ego becomes more insane and creates wars, violence, famine, environment pollution, exploitation of women, of animals etc…

Gurdieff and Samael Aun Weor have also said that Kundabuffer or Kundarticuador was also the factor which together with the sexual degeneration caused the development of ego.

COMMENTARY: Sexual energy is the primordial and most powerful energy of the universe, and it is the only one that has the power to create at all levels.

Everything in this universe is modifications of this primordial energy. All physical and psychic phenomena are created by the Divine sexual Shakti.

Be aware that the physical body is created by two sexual cells, one spermatozoon and one ovum. These two sexual cells are united and modified to all other cells and organs of the body. Similarly all psychological features, positive and negative ones, are modifications of sexual energy.

That’s why most of spiritual paths give great importance to the transformation of sexual energy. Some paths like Tantra yoga or hatha yoga aim with very specific practices to transform the sexual energy and activate the shakti-kundalini. Sexual energy wisely utilized can transform a man to God. False use of it can create the egoic qualities in man and transform him even to a demon.

Question: Are there particular stages in the spiritual life when celibacy becomes especially important or even essential?

Swami Chitananda: Yes and no. From one point of view, celibacy forms the very foundation, and the foundation is not any later stage of a constructive process. It is the very first stage, the ABC stage. So we may say that essential right from the very beginning.

Question: If you wanted to call it a stage, then it means you’d call it the stage where you start taking the spiritual life seriously. 

Swami Chitananda: If your aspiration is to be authentic and genuine, and if the aspiration is to take the form of an all-out commitment towards the spiritual experience and an all-out effort to move in that direction, then you must keep moving only in that direction. You cannot run after two things. Because then it will be taking one step forward and one step backwards, and you will never really progress.

The spiritual life starts with your recognition that as long as you keep going headlong in the pursuit of sense satisfaction and pleasure, you are not going to move one step. So all will be academic and theoretical. Our aspiration, our wanting spiritual life will only be in theory—a fancy and a feeling. You have not started. So the beginning stage itself of the spiritual life is a turning away from sense experience and sense indulgence and starting to move in the opposite direction.

It is perhaps precisely for this reason that Maharshi Patanjali put brahmacharya right at the very commencement of his eight-stage Raja Yoga and not at any later stage. It is one of the five vows that constitute the first stage. If he had thought that it was only important or essential at a later stage, he would have brought it in at the third or fourth stage. But no, he did it at the very beginning.

Swami Sivananda used to say: “Brahmacharya is the basis of immortality.” And in many places in the Upanishads it says: “Wisdom experience cannot come to one who has not his senses under restraint and who has not controlled the vagaries of his wandering mind.” 

Question: Tantra or the practice of “Sacred Sexuality,” is becoming very popular in the West today. Do you think these teachings offer an authentic spiritual path?  

Swami Chitananda:
No, I do not think that these teachings offer an authentic spiritual path. Why?
Because of human frailty, human weakness. The human mind is so made that it always takes the path of least resistance. It always wants the easy way.
Tantra is an approach to God through all types of sense enjoyment. Everything is offered to God and so everything becomes sanctified; nothing is profane. One enjoys sense satisfaction and sees it also as part of God’s bliss.
There is a view, and it has something to it, that while in all human experiences duality persists—there is an “I am enjoying this object” feeling—that in the ultimate sexual experience between a truly loving male, intensely in love with the female and fully reciprocated by the female, there is no consciousness of one’s separate individuality. There is a total fusion of the separatist consciousness in each one, and there is only the awareness of bliss experience. There is no experiencer.
They say this is a possibility when it is done to its perfection. The two cease to be and there is only one, non-dual experience, Experience Absolute, Brahmic-consciousness.
So they say that the human body is an instrument that, if properly made use of, can bring about a rising above body consciousness.

Everything in nature has a male and a female expression, such as in trees, fruits, flowers, animals, and also humans. In the human it is the feminine or negative side that is passive, but magnetic. It attracts to itself, it absorbs and stores potential energy. The male or positive side is electric or charged. When there is a union between the electric male and the magnetic female, the couple provides a conduit for cosmic force, which flows through them into the earth plane with tremendous power. This power radiated by them, polarizes the surrounding atmosphere. The female at this time is surrounded by a corona of greenish-blue mystic light. There is actually a powerful cosmic force surrounding us at all times that seeks expression through polarization or sexual union. Therefore, because sex invokes a cosmic force it takes on a sacred meaning, as well as providing a vehicle for the incoming soul.

Sex cannot be treated as an exercise in eroticism with an orgasmic overtone. Sex, solely due to the abuse of it, has brought to humans disease, suffering and death. Basically, there is nothing wrong with sex. It is the human misinterpretation and misuse of sex that is wrong. That which is of God and carries a sacred connotation cannot be profaned by humanity. Yet, for millions of people, sex is the only joy in life that they know. However, because the human is a self-contained universe, sex really brings two universes together to produce - by the holy process of reproduction - a third and so on ad infinitum. God, in the process of reproducing himself, merges one part of himself into another in order to bring forth a third; the trinity functioning in a triad world. 

The seeds of immortality exist in and are a part of the human. Again, the main thrust of sex is to bring higher and higher souls into this world, and not to profane sex through lust and bring in lower and lower souls and sow the seeds of destruction in the world, such as we now see; humans wantonly killing one another.

In the man it is the feminine force that is passive and in the woman it is the masculine force that is passive, and before either one can be liberated these forces must be awakened. This is done through the near perfect union of soul to soul, mind to mind and body to body, a true affinity. Thereby, a balance in the female magnetic and the male electric forces is affected. As a result of the merging of the magnetic and electric forces the two combined create an electromagnetic field of force that is all-encompassing. The all-absorbing female force field unites in perfect harmony with the dynamic and kinetic power of the male in a near perfect union.

The energy generated through this male-female union is far greater than anything they can generate separately, because acting together they are able to draw to themselves a great portion of the cosmic energy that exists around them. This in turn sets every atom into a higher vibration. Also at this time, because of the polarization created around them, an impenetrable barrier to every form of evil that might approach or attack them is established.

Because there is a bio-electrical exchange of energy between two partners there is an intensification of sensitivity in the body, mind and soul. The body becomes sensual, the mind becomes more telepathic and the soul intuitional. This is so because the sexual union unlocks normally unused power. The universe itself is one indivisible matrix of cosmic force and this force is always seeking release or expression through a union of its opposite energies. So it seeks release in a couple who become a channel of discharge for this unique force.

Sex between two partners can take them to heaven or it can become hell, it can bestow greater health or it can cause disease and disability. Two right people together in love are one thing, but a wrong couple together is most certainly another thing. That which has the power to create also has the power to destroy. 

Partners must grow in sex the same as they grow in everything else in life. Where one partner fails in this relationship the marriage is on shaky ground. Also, where there is no harmony between two people, sex can cause a mental and physical breakdown in the female. As a couple progresses along in their marriage, sex should move from the more physical to a more sacred and mystical experience of fulfillment. 

Marriages that are based on a physical-sexual relationship only, are usually doomed from the very beginning.

A good healthy sexual relationship throughout the years of marriage keeps each partner stimulated and charged, along with keeping them youthful. However, everything should be kept in balance. If the male is over-sexed he should not continually force his wife into a sexual relationship, because he can overcharge her and cause her to become a nervous wreck and to have violent outbreaks of anger. On the other hand, if the wife is too demanding sexually she can wear the man out and drain the energy from him. Couples should, if possible, sleep together since this is beneficial to both, unless one of them is ill.

As one grows spiritually one slowly moves towards celibacy. This occurs through the process of transcending whereby energy and power is infused from the field of the absolute Being into the physical world, thereby overshadowing the physical side of life. However, this is a long, slow process and not an overnight occurrence.

In humans it is the emotional contact between partners that is the prime factor. There must be an emotional action and reaction between them before any bond is established. One person alone cannot forge such a bond. The other must respond to that emotion before any bond is established. If one person responds to the expression of emotion from another, then a bond is formed. And the continuity of the relationship endures as long as any emotion continues to be exchanged between a couple; and that may be love at first sight or love that grows as the relationship grows.

 Also, karma may dictate the relationship as something from the past that has to be worked out. In this case love may be missing, yet the relationship must be endured, albeit the emotional bond may be a negative one. You might say in a larger sense that it is karma that brings all people together, only some is negative karma instead of positive karma. So in the overall sense, marriages are made in heaven. That is, marriages are agreed upon before we arrive on this earth for this life.

For one partner to decide to become a celibate for one reason or another and then deny the other a sex release is pure cruelty and is not the path to spirituality. As Westerners we are people of action whereas Easterners are more passive people. Therefore, what may be natural for them can be cruel to us. It is true that on the road to spirituality one becomes celibate, but for most people that is a long way off. For most people, celibacy is simply a case of mood making. Generally speaking, when one becomes celibate there is no consideration of sex. Also, their karma will indicate if it is right. Marriage should never become a burden, but should always be one of mutual consideration, kindness and love. One great mistake so many make is seeking love through sex. This doesn't work because sex is a natural extension of love that already exists.

In the final analysis, the highest sexual pleasure attainable is only a shadow of the bliss experienced through sexual energy converted into creative power. This is the real resurrection from death of the flesh to eternal life. Sexual energy is the link between the material world and the spiritual. It helps the human spirit to be born into a material body. Later on it helps the human in his efforts to grow spiritually by using sexual energy as the means to stimulate and raise his consciousness to divine cosmic awareness.
