The I am and the witness! ~Nisargadatta

The I am and the witness!

~Nisargadatta

The witness is both unreal and real. The last remnant of the illusion, the first touch of the real. To say: I am only the witness is both false and true, false because of the ‘I am’, true because of the witness. It is better to say: ‘there is witnessing’.

The moment you say ‘I am’, the entire universe comes into being along with its creator.

34. Immortality is freedom from the feeling: ‘I am’. Yet it is not extinction. On the contrary, it is a state infinitely more real, aware and happy than you can possibly think of. Only self-consciousness is no more.
Who would remain even to say ‘I am the witness’?
When there is no ‘I am’, where is the witness? In the timeless state there no self to take refuge in.

OM! The Divine Mother -Shakti and the awakening of kundalini

The Divine Mother -Shakti  \ The active aspect of Brahman

and the awakening of kundalini

Brahman (Shiva or Atman or God, or Spirit etc.) and Shakti are not two. They are the static and the dynamic aspects of one and the same principle.

"The power or active aspect of the immanent God is Shakti. Shiva (Brahman, God etc.) is the unchanging consciousness. Shakti is His changing Power which appears as mind and matter. She runs this world-show. She maintains the sportive play or Lila of the Lord. She is the supporter of the vast universe. She is the supreme Power by which the world is upheld. She is the Universal Mother (the Divine Mother)."
~ Swami Sivananda

"It is this cosmic energy, this Para Shakti, that manifests as the incredible energy of the sun, the energy of the planets and, the incredible speed at which they whirl in their own orbits. It is this cosmic energy which manifests as the power of gravity, as the power of the sun’s radiance, as the power of all these great planets and heavenly bodies, as the power of the wind and other elements. Shakti controls the entire manifestation, just as electricity allows all appliances to work."
~ Swami Chitananda

"The Divine Mother is everywhere triple. She is endowed with the three Gunas, viz., Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. She manifests Herself as Will (Ichha Shakti), Action (Kriya Shakti) and Knowledge (Jnana Sakti). She is Brahma-Shakti (Sarasvati) in conjunction with Brahma, Vishnu-Shakti (Lakshmi) in conjunction with Vishnu and Shhiva-Sakti (Gauri) in conjunction with Shiva. Hence She is called Tripurasundari. The Chaitanya (consciousness) that is associated with the Sattva Guna is Vishnu. The Chaitanya that is associated with Rajoguna is Brahma and the Chaitanya associated with Tamoguna is Siva.
The one Ishvara (Chaitanya associated with Shakti or Maya; the reflection of Brahman in Maya is Ishvara.) has become three according to the functions of creations, preservation and destruction. The Chaitanya (consciousness) is the same."
~ Swami Sivananda

The Shakti is neither female nor male. She is everything, male, female and neutral and beyond these aspects also. Shakti is considered as female in relation with Brahman which of course is not neither male nor female; Brahman or the absolute Truth is beyond any description.

"Any power that we see in this universe is the power of this great cosmic force and it is this same power that animates all living beings, trees, plants, insects, birds, bees, reptiles, fish and animals. It is the power of the lion, it is the power of the elephant and it is the power of the brilliant intellect or genius of a Faraday, a Raman or an Einstein.

"This self-same power abides in us and animates our entire body mechanism. Our lives depend entirely upon Shakti, which grants us vitality, feeling and consciousness or awareness, through which we operate on all levels and can set in motion both our outer actions and inner sadhana (spiritual practice).

"The body is Shakti. The mind is Shakti. The needs of the body are the needs of Shakti. The shakti is the power that digests our food, that makes our heart pump blood, that makes our lungs breathe, that makes our muscles and joints work, that makes our tongue talk and ear hear.
~ Swami Chitananda

"The Shakti rules over the processes of birth and death and the unfoldment karma. She provides our souls with the bodies and minds and the worlds in which to experience life. All that we eat, breathe, perceive, feel or know consists of some portion of her energy and an aspect of Her dynamic processes that surround us on every side. All that we seek to acquire for sustenance, happiness, knowledge or growth is part of Her and comes from Her."
 ~ David Frawley

The sexual aspect of Shakti

The sexual energy is the most fundamental expression of cosmic energy, because through it the entire universe is born and exists.
In our bodies its main functions is the reproduction of the species and the experience of pleasure, but it is even more important in spiritual development.

Sexual energy is the deepest
reservoir of our energy. In the sexual fluids (semen and vaginal fluids) are stored the more subtle and fine energies (Tejas and Ojas) which are very important for maintaining good health, mental and emotional balance and harmony and achieve a high level of consiousness .

Sexual energy has also a higher potential which causes the
awakening of Shakti-kundalini which in its turn awake the superior capabilities of the seven chakras and mind (clairvoyance, clairaudience, cosmic consciousness etc.).

"It is this very power that is also present as the sex energy in us. Therefore, the sex energy is nothing but the presence of the Divine Mother in all human beings."

"So, the sexual energy is part of the one indivisible great cosmic power present in the human individual. In its gross biological aspect, it is called the sexual energy. In its subtler aspect, it is the energy of discrimination, the power of the intellect to analyze and enquire and ratiocinate. In a still subtler aspect, in its psychic aspect, it is the power of the Shakti Kundalini. And in its supreme aspect, it is nothing but Atma-Shakti. Because Brahman and Shakti are not two. They are the static and the dynamic aspects of one and the same principle."
~ Swami Chitananda

Shakti and spirituality

"Even to seek Brahman, to seek what is beyond Shakti (Shiva, Brahman etc.), we must work with Shakti. Shakti provides us the power of meditation and the discriminating insight through which we can transcend time and space. This means that the best means for both spiritual realization and for gaining all the other goals of life is to worship Shakti, to work with and for the Goddess (Divine Mother). There is no other way as effective, if there is any other way at all. If the Brahman is the goal, the Shakti is both the path and the power to traverse it. We can awaken and follow her current to Brahman, or remain asleep and get caught in her outside streams that move in different directions."
 ~ David Frawley

The worship and devotion of Divine Mother can be included in all spiritual paths and can be a part of the sadhana of everyone who wants to realize the Truth.  But there are paths like Shaktaism that are dedicated in the worship of the Divine Mother and have spesific practices for the awakening of Shakti-kundalini.

Worship and devotion can be done by rituals, prayers, singing praises and kirtan, reading sacred texts about the Divine mother, repetion of mantras, by the sexual Maithuna and finally by recognising every person and action as a manifestation of the Shakti, by seeing  the Divine Mother in everything.

Shakti-Kundalini yoga sadhana

Shaktaism is an ancient path of India in which the devotees adore the Divine Mother and with specific practices aim to the unfolding and awakening of Shakti-Kundalini.

"Shaktaism helps the aspirant to arouse the Kundalini and unite Her with Lord Shiva (pure Consciousness) and to enjoy the supreme bliss or Nirvikalpa Samadhi. A Shakta (devotee of Shakti) does Sadhana which helps the union of Shiva and Shakti through the awakening of the forces within the body. He becomes a Siddha (perfect) in the Sadhana when he is able to awaken Kundalini and pierce the six Chakras. The mode of Sadhana depends upon the tendencies and capacities of the Sadhaka. One should become perfectly desireless and should be full of Vairagya before he attempts to awaken Kundalini.

"In this path the aspirant adores the Shakti and practices, Dhyana, Bhava, Japa, pranayamas and Shakti-Mantra in order to awaken the Shakti-kundalini. Devotion, celibacy, renunciation, dispassion and purity of mind are necessary for the awakening of kundalini."
~ Swami Sivananda

There are other paths like the Tao and the Gnosis movement of Samael Aun Weor which although they give practices for celibates  for the transformation of sexual energy they suggest the sexual Maithuna as the main practice for the awakening of kundalini. However, in these paths are also essential the purity of mind, the dispassion, concentration and meditation for the awakening of kundalini.
Sexual Maithuna is the adoration of Shakti through the sexual union of male and female without orgasm in order to transform the sexual energy and awaken the Kundalini. Shakti kundalini is the serpent power, that has 3 coils with face downwards, in the Muladhara Chakra, at the base of the spine.  By concentration, imagination, pranayama, bandhas and mantras the aspirants lead the sexual energy through the spine (the subtle nadis of ida, pigala and susumna). When kundalini awakens, awaken also the latent superior powers of the six chakras and the yogi aquires siddhis (clairvoyance, clairaudience, cosmic consciousness etc.).

However  Maithuna is not easy to practice in this age and paths like Advaita suggest celibacy.

Swami Sivananda used to say: “Brahmacharya is the basis of immortality.”

Sri Swami Sivananda
Sri Swami Sivananda who himself followed celibacy, suggests celibacy, and considers as more important requisites or qualifications for the awakening of Kundalini, as well as for self-realization, the purity of mind (a mind free from desire, anger, greed, fear, jealousy and rajas and tamas gunas), the devotion, the discrimination, the dispassion, the absence of Iness and mineness, the faith and concentration. He claims that Kundalini can be awakened by various ways :

"Kundalini can be awakened by various methods such as Japa, devotion, Vichara (enquiry of “Who am I”), Asana, Kumbhaka, Bandhas, Mudras, and above all by the Grace of the Guru."

Sivananda, Paramahansa Ramakrishna and Amritanadamayi (Amma) are great sages that demostrate that Kundalini can be awakened by celibacy despite the fact that devotees of Tantra and Samael Aun Weor (the founder of Gnosis) insist that the sexual Maithuna is necessary for the awakening of kundalini.

"When Kundalini is awakened, reaches the top of the head after piercing one Chakra after another and finally unites with Lord Shiva and enjoys the Highest Bliss. Now the Yogi attains super conscious state and becomes a full-blown Jnani. He drinks the Nectar of Immortality. Illustration shows the ascent of the Kundalini to the top of the head and its union with Lord Siva.

"When Kundalini sleeps, man is awake to the world. He has objective consciousness. When She awakes, he sleeps. He loses all consciousness of the world and becomes one with the Lord. In Samadhi, the body is maintained by the nectar which flows from the union of Shiva and Shakti in the Sahasrara.

"Mother Kundalini-Shakti unites with Lord Shiva in the Sahasrara during Nirvikalpa Samadhi. This is real Maithuna or blissful union. This is due to Divya-Bhava (divine disposition).ª

"No one can free himself from the thralldom of mind and matter without Mother’s grace. The fetters of Maya are too hard to break. If you worship Her as the great Mother, you can very easily go beyond Prakriti through Her benign grace and blessings. She will remove all obstacles in the path, lead you safely into the illimitable domain of eternal bliss, and make you absolutely free."

Om! Connection with the silence of Being by Atman Nityananda

Connection with the silence of Being

Inner peace and silence are our natural state, but when we lose contact with them, the mind becomes extroverted, turning outward toward distractions and agitation. This disconnection gives rise to restlessness, thoughts, and emotions. However, the mind’s turbulence can subside, and its natural stillness can return when we consciously reconnect with the silence and peace within.

The methods we can use to restore a deep and complete connection with the inner silence are as follows:

1. Questioning Thoughts or Emotions: When thoughts or emotions arise, we can inquire into their source. For example, ask, “To whom have these thoughts arisen?” The answer is “To me.” Then, question further, “What is the source of the ‘me’?” This helps in tracing the origin of our sense of self and reconnecting with inner silence.

2. Focusing on the Sense of ‘Me‘: We can also direct our full attention to the sense of ‘me’ or ‘I.’ In this method, we first use the approach of questioning, but instead of seeking the inner source of ‘me’ or ‘I,’ we focus completely on the sense of ‘me’ itself. We can facilitate the concentration on the sense of ‘me’ by asking these questions: “Can I feel completely this sense of ‘me’?” or “Can I be fully aware of this sense of ‘me’?” By deeply concentrating on this sense of ‘me’, we align ourselves with the inner silence.

Meditation differs according to the degree of advancement of the seeker. If one is fit for it, one might directly hold on to the thinker, and the thinker will automatically sink into its source, namely, pure consciousness (the silent space of consciousness).

Ramana Maharshi

3. Another way to connect with inner silence and deepen it is to focus our awareness fully on the sense of “I am” or “I exist.” To make our attention and mind effortlessly focus on this sense of “I am,” we can use questions like, “Can I fully feel that I am?” “Can I be fully aware that I am?” and “Can I fully attend to the sense of ‘I am’?” By gently being aware of this sense of “I am” or “I exist,” we gradually get in touch with the background of the “I am,” the silent, empty space of consciousness.

4. Inquiring About Connection: Another method is to ask, “Can I connect with the inner silence?” After asking this once or twice, we simply turn our attention within and focus on the inner silence.

Every time our attention strays away from the sense of “I am” or the inner silence, we can use one of the above methods to reconnect with the inner silence. If we use the inquiry method, we ask, “To whom does this thought arise?” The answer is, “To me.” We then connect with the “me” and ask, “What is the source of ‘me’?” If we use the sense of “I am” method, whenever our attention strays, we can ask, “Can I feel the sense of ‘I am’?” “Can I feel that I am?” or “Can I feel that I exist?”. Our focus of attention thus returns to the Sense “I Am”, and we remain gently there, deepening in this Sense “I Am”. Through it, we connect with the silence within.

5. Another way to connect with inner silence is to mentally repeat the mantra “Om.” Repeat the mantra slowly, prolonging each sound, (Ooooommmmmm..) and focus initially on the sound itself and then on how it fades away. After the sound has completely subsided, remain fully aware of the silence that follows. Then, repeat the mantra again in the same prolonged manner, focusing first on the sound and how it gradually fades out. Finally, direct your attention to the silence that remains after the sound has completely vanished, maintaining awareness of this silence. When the mind becomes deeply quiet, we can cease repeating the mantra and focus solely on the silence. If the mind starts to wander or generate thoughts, we use the mantra to regain control and return to inner silence. Each time our mind strays, we repeat the mantra “Om” in a prolonged manner to refocus and reconnect with the inner silence.

How capable we are of maintaining a complete connection with the inner silence and avoiding the extroversion of the mind—thus preventing the loss of contact with it—or, when we do lose contact, how easily we can regain it, depends on the purity of our mind, the extent of our practice and on how much we have developed various capacities such as dispassion, discernment, concentration, devotion, and the desire for truth and liberation.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).

🔶 Present & God

🔶 Present & God

by Atman Nityananda

👉 The Nature of the Present

The PRESENT or the NOW is timeless and unchanging, always the same and the source of life and all phenomena, that’s why it is always fresh.

The PRESENT (the present moment) does not belong to time (which is a creation of the mind).

👉 The True Nature of the Present Moment

The timeless NOW or PRESENT is not a temporal moment, a tiny fraction of time or an event,
but the UNMOVING, UNCHANGING BASE upon which CHANGING EVENTS occur.

👉 Being & Consciousness

That is, the PRESENT (I repeat: not a time indicator, but a timeless present moment) is simultaneously BEING and CONSCIOUSNESS

– it is in fact the ETERNAL LIVING GOD.
That’s why it is always fresh, whole, and beautiful.

👉 Freedom from the Matrix

The moment one realizes that they ARE the PRESENT, they are freed from the Matrix.

> "You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free."
Jesus Christ

👉 The True Identity

The Truth is that you are not the body, the persona, the vital energy, or the mind,

but the TIMELESS PRESENT,

that is
FORMLESS, TIMELESS, IMMORTAL, 🌞 LIGHT – CONSCIOUSNESS

ATMAN IS SAT-CHIT-ANANDA - Swami sivananda

ATMAN IS SAT-CHIT-ANANDA

Sat, Chit and Ananda are one. Atman is partless and homogeneous. The three characteristics Sat, Chit and Ananda are not distinct from one another. They are coeval and coexistent with Atman. Sat-Chit-Ananda signify the one Atman. Sat is Chit. Sat is Ananda. Chit is Sat. Chit is Ananda. Ananda is Sat. Ananda is Chit. You cannot split up Sat-Chit-Ananda into three separate entities, just as you cannot separate light, heat and luminosity from fire.

 Atman is Sat

Atman is Sat. That which exists in the past, present and future, which has no beginning, middle and end, which is unchanging, which is not conditioned in time, space and causation, which exists during Jagrat, Svapna and Sushupti, which is of the nature of one homogeneous essence (Sada Ekarasa, Sada Ekarupa) is Sat. This is found in Atman. Srutis emphatically declare: Sat only was prior to the evolution of this universe.

 Atman is Chit

Atman is Chit because he shines by himself without the help of any other light and illuminates the entire universe by his own light.

The mind is finite and inert. He has no independent intelligence. He is not self-luminous. The brilliance of him is borrowed from the Light of the fountain. He is subject to various limitations and changes. He is only an inert product of subtle matter. Only the Atman is the source of Chit. The mind is also perceived by Chit. The mind has a beginning and an end.

The external universe, however varied and large it may be, is after all only inert matter. It cannot be the object of our perception unless we cast upon it the flow of light from our consciousness; he can never know us. It is enlightened only by us. It can never enlighten us.

Atman is Ananda

Ananda is that bliss that is eternal, uncaused and incomparable. It is the true nature of Atman.

But the supreme bliss of Brahman has no degrees. It is infinite or unlimited because there is nothing superior to it. The bliss of deep sleep has no degrees.

Brahman bliss cannot be adequately expressed in words. It has to be felt and realized through the direct realization of the Self. Although we experience it, it is not an experience like the enjoyment of an object, because you are then an incarnation of bliss itself.

All miseries come to an end when one realizes (realizes) the Atman. Therefore the Atman must be an embodiment of bliss. Sat is Chit. Sat is Ananda too.

He who has realized this Sat-Chit-Ananda Atman is a liberated sage. He has nothing else to learn, he has nothing else to do, he has nothing else to gain. All his wishes are satisfied. He has obtained all the worlds. He is freed from the clutches of death. He achieves immortality.

Om! The Purpose of Life - Awakening of Consciousness - by Nityananda Atman

The purpose of life - Awakening of Consciousness
To have a heart as pure as crystal,
a mind as luminous as the sun,
a soul as vast as the universe,
a spirit as powerful as God
and one with God

       ~Omraam Aivanhov

What is the purpose of life?
It is to find out who we really are; the realization of our True Self or Atman.

That is the main purpose of every human being. All other purposes have a secondary place in our life. Self-realization, self-knowledge, God-realization, liberation, enlightenment, are synonymous terms. They point to the same goal. The realization of our real Self whose nature is pure awareness.

'The highest goal of man is to enquire, "Who am I?" and realize the Self. If a human being does not try to realize this, he lives in vain.'
~ Ramana Maharshi
What is illusion?
Illusion is the imagination that you are a body-mind entity, an illusory image, separate from God and the universe. Because of ignorance (maya), and the impurities of mind (the qualities of rajas  and tamas), you cannot discriminate the eternal Self or awareness that you really are from the impermanent vehicles (body-mind) that are objects in awareness.
‘Ignorance supervenes and draws a veil over the pure bliss. This ignorance consists in wrong knowledge. The wrong knowledge consists in the false identification of the Self with the body, the mind, etc. This false identity must go and there remains the Self.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
Nobody can really explain when this illusion started or why. This is the game of life. This illusion can be destroyed, if you are sincere and do rigorous sadhana (spiritual disciplne or practices). In the course of time, it will flash through you that you are awareness itself and not the body-mind entity.

‘There must be untiring effort to go inward all the time until the Self is realized.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
What is the Self?
The Self or consciousness is the eternal, timeless, formless, causeless, essence of life. It is the one without a second (nondual) reality beyond this perceptual universe. It is a homogenous mass of consciousness, without parts, without attributes, without birth and death.

It is the substratum of all gross and subtle experiences. It is the centerless center in every creature. It is within and without, above and below, it permeates and fulfils everything.
The Self in you is the Self of all. Bodies are many, minds are many but the Self is only One. The One Self appears as many owing to the illusory appearance of bodies and minds. As the one sun in the sky appears as many owing to its reflection in the water of many different vessels, the one without a second (nondual) Self appears as many owing to its reflection in different minds.
This immortal Self shines in the chambers of your heart as your own Self. It is your real identity, your origin and your final destination.

How can the desire to find my true nature
arise within me?
Consciousness (the Soul from within) impels you to find out the truth because awareness itself wants to be awakened in you. But you, the person, have to do the sadhana. We are all instruments of the divine will but we become conscious of it only after awakening.

How is possible to get liberation or enlightenment?

Even to win a lottery you have to do something, at least to buy the ticket! Similarly, Self-realization is not going to happen accidentally, except in some very rare cases in which it seems to happen so.
The scriptures and the sages declare that instant realization and liberation can only happen to those who did intense sadhana  in their previous births. This is the case of Sri Ramana Maharshi, but this is unknown to the majority. So you have to do sadhana or spiritual practices to prepare yourself for the dawn of jnana (knowledge).

'Without spiritual practice (upasana), there cannot be attainment. This is certain.‘
~ Ramana Maharshi
How will I know who is the appropriate spiritual teacher or which is the right teaching?
You will feel it; there will be a certainty like ‘I am at home’. You will feel attraction to the teacher or the teaching and you will be elevated. If there is any doubt in your mind, you can pray and the answer will be given to you.
What is the right spiritual practice or the right way for me?
Any practice given from the scriptures and great spiritual masters are appropriate for sadhana.
For you, good is the practice that is suited more to your temperament, maturity and the present conditions of your life. There is no such thing as good or bad practice. What suits you is a good practice for you. That does not mean it is good for all. Furthermore, what is appropriate for you this time maybe is not so at a more advanced stage.
‘To each person that way is the best which appears easiest or appeals most. All the ways are equally good, as they lead to the same goal, which is merging of the ego in the Self.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
Man is a composition of body, mind and spirit. Therefore, it is necessary to include in your sadhana practices for all these aspects of existence. You need a healthy body, abundant energy, mental and emotional balance and harmony. The spirit can be revealed where there is predominance of sattva quality, which brings harmony at all levels of human existence.
It is absolutely necessary to increase the sattva quality, through spiritual practices and a sattvic lifestyle. Sattva is the foundation of physical and mental well-being and Self-realization.

‘If the aspirants have not one-pointed mind - which is possible for him who has pure mind full of sattva - dispassion, discrimination etc., Self-inquiry is impossible.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
What is the aim of sadhana or spiritual practices?
Sadhana has two aims.

First: The purification of mind from rajas  and tamas qualities and the increase of sattva. The destruction of the lower or impure mind (desires, lust, greed, anger, fear, jealousy, attachments, etc.) and the ego itself (the sense ‘I am the body’ and its consequences: ‘I-ness’, ‘mineness’, I am the doer, and I am the enjoyer).

‘Since purity of mind is indispensable for any kind of spiritual practice, it possesses an eminence of the highest order.’
‘The greatness of
chitta shuddhi (purity of mind) is that it is the mother of all virtuous conduct. Realizing this, examine your mind every day.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
Second: The inquiry into the nature of your real Self (awareness) and the permanent abidance as ‘That’ after the realization.
‘Letting go of the external objects, turn your back on them, and realize through keen inquiry the effulgent truth that shines in the heart.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
These two aspects of sadhana go together but the first one has precedence, because it makes the mind pure, one-pointed, steady, introverted, discriminative, a capable instrument to do Self-inquiry and meditation effectively. Then through meditation or Self-inquiry the mind becomes finer and finer and finally dissolves in the Self.
‘Only to such a mind which has gained the inner strength of one-pointedness, Self-inquiry will be successful.’
~ Ramana Maharshi

Two important notes:

1. Realization is not something you can attain by effort. This does not mean that sadhana is not necessary. You have to prepare yourself for realization. You must eliminate all those things that prevent realization. Realization will happen by itself when the right time will come. Purification, intense longing to find the truth, sincerity, faith, steady determination, vigilance are very important to succeed in this endeavour.

‘You are the Self. You are already That. The fact is that you are ignorant of your blissful state. Ignorance supervenes and draws a veil over pure bliss. Attempts are directed only to remove this ignorance.’
~ Ramana Maharshi

2. Be careful because spirituality also can be a nice field for the egoic mind to play its roles. Beware always! Be alert, because ego always tries its best to delude you. But if you are sincere and unceasingly vigilant, you will find out the fancies of ego and you will dissolve them.
‘The spiritual practice adopted by the jiva becomes complete upon the destruction of the ego at its source.’
 ~ Ramana Maharshi
Satsang
Satsang (meetings with realized souls) is one of the most potent means to dispel ignorance. The magnetic aura of a realized sage can elevate you and give you a great help in your way to Self-realization. That does not mean that sadhana is not necessary. Sadhana becomes very effective when is practiced at the feet of a great master.
‘Sankara has said that in all the three worlds there is no boat likesatsang to carry one safely across the ocean of births and deaths.’
~ Ramana Maharshi

It is very important also to do sadhana at sacred places where the energies are very pure and powerful. Reading also books of realized sages or sacred scriptures, like the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, can give you light, strength and inspiration.

Who is going to get liberation or Self-realization?
Liberation is not an achievement of the ego, but the dissolution of the ego. Self-knowledge is the realization that you are pure consciousness and not the mind-made entity or ego.
That means that consciousness itself will realize in you, (through the medium of pure crystal like buddhi) its own nature, as the eternal, immutable, blissful essence of life.
The very death of the ego in all its aspects (I-ness, mineness, doership, enjoyership, desires, lust, greed, guilt, anger, etc.) will result in liberation. This is the very death of your egoic self, but your birth to the eternal life.

‘The glory of self-realization is not experienced except in the hearts of those who are very zealous about sinking into the Self.’
~ Ramana Maharshi
What is the difference between awakening and liberation?
Awakening is the realization that we are not the body-mind complex or the ego but the witnessing consciousness behind them. When awakening happens there is a spontaneous disidentification from the mind and body and the realization that we are the space-consciousness in which the body and mind appear.
However, awakening is not necessarily accompanied by the total destruction of the egoic mind. In some cases, awakening can destroy all the egoic mind structures. In other cases, after awakening a great amount of latent impressions (samskaras andvasanas) continue to exist in the subconscious mind, interrupting the experience of the Self. Sadhana must be continued until all vasanas are totally fried and the abidance in the Self will be permanent and effortless.

‘…intense effort is necessary until the I-thought will disappear completely in the heart (Self) and all the vasanas and samskaras will be fried and do not revive again.’
‘Knowledge (
jnana) can only remain unshaken after all vasanas are rooted out.’
~ Ramana Maharshi

People who have some kind of awakening may confuse it with liberation or the final state of realization. Keep in mind that there is no liberation if identification with ‘ego’, body, emotions, thoughts and sense objects continues after awakening. There is no liberation if the vasanas and samskaras drive out the mind to entertain sense objects.

‘All the age-long vasanas carry the mind outward and turn it to external objects. All such thoughts have to be given up and the mind turned inward. For that, effort is necessary for most people.’
~ Ramana Maharshi

The Self shines in the heart, so effort is necessary to keep the mind inward. Until all vasanassamskaras, desires and the ‘I’ thought are destroyed, effort is necessary to keep the mind still in the heart.

‘If the six illusory enemies (desire, anger, greed, delusion, intoxication and envy), beginning with desire, that mingle in your heart are totally destroyed, the extremely clear light of
jnana will shine.’
‘An unruffled mind established in the heart is the fence that protects the field of liberation.’

~ Ramana Maharshi

But do we really want to abandon sense pleasures? Do we really want to lose our egoic identity? The enjoyment of sense pleasures and the abidance in the Self are opposites. We cannot serve two masters; we have to make a choice.

‘Why give up the marvelous experience of peace by desiring imaginary and degraded sense enjoyments?’
‘Do not allow yourself to be buffeted by the sense perceptions in this world, but become firmly established in the discipline of spiritual practice (
tapas), and be totally free of misery.’
 ~ Ramana Maharshi

‘No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and mammon.’
~ Jesus Christ

What is the main prerequisite for Self-realization?
If you really want the truth heartfully; if you have zeal, earnestness, sincerity, intense longing and if you give all your energy, mind, body, everything you have, the truth will be revealed to you when the time is right. There is no doubt about this. Nothing can stop you reaching your destination; the abode of eternal Peace and happiness.
‘One must be ready to sacrifice everything for the truth.’
'Firm resolve to discover the truth for oneself is important.'

~ Ramana Maharshi

At every time on your journey towards Self-realization, you will find everything you need, the right book, the right spiritual teacher, the right teaching for you. Do not worry. Be flexible, be open, be patient, do your best every moment and the next step will come by itself.

'There is a steady determination that gets you on your feet again after a fail or break.'
~ Ramana Maharshi

O man! What do you really want? To be a small egocentric entity full of miseries and sufferings, a slave of illusory sense pleasures or to realize that you are the formless, timeless and ever free consciousness, always content, happy and peaceful?

Self-realization is your birthright
You can realize it in this very birth
Time is flitting
Death can come at any time
Don't waste your time in trifling things
Roam like a lion, fear nothing
Do rigorous sadhana
Be alert, be vigilant
You are bound to succeed
Realize the Self here and now
And be an embodiment of peace and harmony.
Om Tat Sat
~Nityananda Atman
