~~~~~~
Silent japa should be engaged in at all times. One must not waste breath uselessly; whenever one has nothing special to do, one should silently practice japa in rhythm with one's breathing. In fact, this exercise should go on continually until doing japa has become as natural as breathing.
- Sri Amritanandamayi Ma
Quote of Haidakhan Babaji
The water to clean your heart is the Name of God
Of greatest importance is that the Repetition of God's Name (Japa) increase daily. In this way, your heart and mind will be purified and only then will you find God in yourself.
The mind can be purified only by Japa. This is the only medicine for the disease of the mind.
While your mind and heart are impure, how can God live in your heart? The water to clean your heart is the Name of God. So teach everyone to repeat the Name of God--everywhere
The mantra "Om mama shivay"
This Om Nama Shivay is like nectar; feed everyone with this nectar. Shri Mahaprabhuji wishes that all words would disappear from this world, except for three - Om Nama Shivay. This is the original mantra. When Primordial Energy first appeared, the first mantra that She uttered from Her holy mouth was Om Nama Shivay.
Meditation & Japa nama
In this dark age (Kali Yuga) the mind of man is weak and restless from the first day of birth. Because of this, no one is able to do the real practice of meditation anymore, but everyone can pray and repeat and chant the name of the Lord, using whichever divine name his religion teaches.
The Wisdom of Chanting and Singing to Lord Siva ॐ By Swami Sivananda Saraswati
The Wisdom of Chanting and Singing to Lord Siva ॐ
The Name of Lord Siva chanted in any way, correctly or incorrectly, knowingly or unknowingly, carefully or carelessly, is sure to give the desired result. The Glory of the Name of Lord Siva cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can certainly be experienced or realized only through devotion, faith and 'constant repetition' of the Name and singing His hymns with Bhava (pure reverent approach).
Every Name is filled with countless potencies or Saktis. The power of the Name is ineffable. Its Glory is indescribable. The efficiency and inherent Sakti of the Name of Lord Siva are unfathomable.
The mind is purified by constant repetition of Siva-Stotra and Names of Lord Siva. The Stotras are filled with good and pure thoughts. Repetition of the hymns to Siva strengthens the good Samskaras. “As a man/woman thinks, that one becomes”. This is the psychological law. The mind of a one who trains their self in thinking good, holy thoughts develops a tendency to think of good thoughts.
Their character is moulded and transformed by continued good thought. When the mind thinks of the 'Image of the Lord' during singing His hymns, the mental substance actually assumes the form of the Image of the Lord. The impression of the object thought of is left in the mind. This is called Samskara. When the act is repeated very often, the Samskaras gain strength by repetition, and a tendency or habit is formed in the mind.
One who entertains Thoughts of Divinity, becomes transformed actually into the Divinity itself by constant thinking. Ones Bhava or disposition is purified and Divinized.  When one sings the hymns of Lord Siva, one is in tune with the Lord. The individual mind melts in the cosmic mind. One who sings the hymns becomes One with Lord Siva.
Just as fire has the natural property of burning inflammable things, so also the Name of Lord Siva has the power of burning the sins, Samskaras and Vasanas and bestowing eternal bliss and everlasting peace on those who repeat the Name of the Lord.
Just as burning quality is natural and inherent in fire, so also the power of destroying sins with their very root and branch and bringing the aspirant into 'blissful union' with the Lord through Bhava Samadhi, is natural and inherent in the Name of God.
O Friends! Take refuge in the Name of Siva. Sing His hymns. Nami and Name are inseparable. Sing Lord Siva’s hymns incessantly. Remember the Name of the Lord with every incoming and outgoing breath. In this Iron Age, Nama-Smarana, (the supreme sadhana) or singing the hymns is the easiest, quickest, safest and surest way to reach God and attain Immortality and perennial joy.
Glory to Lord Siva! Glory to His Name!
ॐ नमः शिवाय.  On nama Shivay!
We need to understand spirituality and live accordingly ~ Amma
We need to understand spirituality and live accordingly. Only then will life become blissful.
Those who desire only worldly pleasures must be prepared to experience suffering as well.
To be worldly is to forget God; it is to want nothing but your own happiness, relying on material objects for that purpose, and being forced to suffer most of your life for the sake of little fragments of pleasure. This is how people lose their peace of mind, and affect those around them as well. To be selfless and surrender everything to God, that is spirituality. Those who live in this way not only experience inner peace themselves, but also engender peace in the hearts of those around them.
Worldly life contains sorrow. Yet, life can still give us happiness if we have some understanding of spirituality. If we jump into a rough sea without having had any training, we could be overwhelmed by the waves and even drown. But those who know how to swim in the sea can easily handle even big waves. Similarly, if we allow spirituality to be the foundation of our lives, we can go forward without faltering under any circumstances, no matter how difficult. The mind finds happiness in one object and hates another. Some people feel they can't live without cigarettes, while others are disturbed by cigarette smoke. Happiness and sorrow reside in the mind.
If you control your mind and direct it toward the right path, there will be only happiness in your life. For this you need spiritual knowledge; and if you live in accordance with that knowledge; and if you live in accordance with that knowledge, there can be no sorrow. Try to chant a mantra always. Talk only about God. Relinquish all selfishness. Surrender everything to God. If you can live in this way, you won't experience suffering.
If we can so easily become attached to anything in the world, why can't we become attached to God ? Our tongues know how to talk about everything; Why can't we teach our tongues to chant our Mantra? If we can do this, not only we ourselves, but also those around us, will find peace.
Without devotion Self-realization is quite impossible Atman Nityananda
Without devotion Self-realization is quite impossible
Atman Nityananda
Devotion is a complete dedication of body, prana. mind and heart to God or Truth. It is love for God. It is intense longing and aspiration to realize Truth or God consciousness.
 Devotion to God takes our interest and attention from the external world and the sensory objects and directs it in our inner world, in our heart, the center of our existence.
By gathering our attention from the outer world we stop the creation of worldly samskaras (impressions and vasanas (tendencies) and we stop to empower the egoic tendencies that already are stored in our subconscious mind (chitta), which are mainly based on desire, pride, fear and anger.
The repetition of God’s names (japa nama ), kirtan and the prayer increase the sattva guna, eliminates the rajas and tamas and dissolves gradually all egoic tendencies. Meditation and Self-enquiry direct the mind towards the source of our mind and thus the mind abandons the objects and is permeated by peace and light divine.
Thus the egoism which is fed and grows by the sensory inputs and the impressions which are created by these inputs,  gradually is thinned out and our mind becomes purer and purer reflecting more and more with clarity the divine light, peace and love.
Devotion is not only for aspirants of Bhakti yoga but also for jnana yoga aspirants. Without devotion a real progress in spiritual path is not possible. The bhaktas are devoted to a form of God while the jnanis in the impersonal truth (Atman or Brahman). For some devotion to a form is easier and for others appears more natural to be devoted to the impersonal Truth. Both lead at the same destination. The dissolution of egoic self and the realization of our essence, God or Brahman and the unity of life.
Really there are only two methods, Enquiry and devotion. One leads to the other. A devotee concentrates on God.
A seeker, follower of the Jnana-marga seeks the Self. The practice is equally difficult for both.
Since God is verily the Self, love of the Self is love of the God and that is bhakti. Jnana and Bhakti are thus one and the same.
Service, like prayers, japa and even businesss done in God’s name, lead to the highest Goal; Self-realization.
Complete effacement of the ego is necessary to conquer destiny, whether you achieve this effacement through Self enquiry or through bhakti-marga.
Self-enquiry is possible for mature minds, not for immature ones.
For the immature ones, japa nama, worship of images, pranayama, visualizing a pillar of light and similar yogic and spiritual and religious practices have been prescribed.
Cause of Fear -Swami Sivananda
Cause of Fear
by Swami Sivananda
Ignorance is the cause of fear. Man tasted the "forbidden fruit" and became a slave of lust. He forgot his original, divine nature and was thus caught up in the whirlpool of ignorance. The infinite fearless Brahman became the finite Jiva with fear. Identification of the body (Dehadhyasa) is the cause of fear.
Dehadhyasa is another form of ignorance. This physical body is an instrument for man’s sensual enjoyment. If he suffers from any disease he is afraid that he will lose this body which serves him as a vehicle for his enjoyment. He tries his level best to preserve this body. All other causes of fear are traceable to Dehadhyasa.
Feeling of inferiority is another cause of fear. This negative feeling produces lack of self-reliance or self-confidence in man. He is afraid of those who are superior to him in talents, power, position and efficiency. He feels that he is incapable of doing anything.
Some physical deformity or deficiency, lack of physical and mental efficiency, wrong training in children, are other causes of fear.
There is no other way to get rid of fear than realization of the Self (Atman or Brahman)
Fear And Raga (attachment)
Fear (Bhaya) and Raga (attachment) are modifications (Vrittis) in the mind. They are temporary whirlpools or waves. The substance of the mind is nothing but Raga and fear. They are twin-sisters. Hence they are closely related to each other. If you destroy fear and Raga there is neither life nor existence for the mind. The Upanishad declares, "Detachment, faith, fear, Raga, shyness, modesty, shame. etc.," are only mind.
Fear is a product of ignorance (Avidya). Man forgets his essential, divine nature through  infatuation and identification with the body ( Moha). He was the all-pervading immortal fearless Soul or Brahman in the beginning. He was the "Santam (Peaceful), Ajaram (decayless), Amritam (immortal), Abhayam (fearless) Brahman." On account of egoism he became a rebellious child. He separated himself from his Father. He had division of property. He started his own independent living in this earth-plane. He rented a house in the mundane world. He entered the body-house of flesh and bone and became a little timid man, a little Jiva, with all sorts of fears. Thus started his downfall on account of his quarrel with his Almighty Father and owing to his starting a new egoistic living with Raga-Dvesha.
He was bodiless muscle-less, fleshless, boneless, I-less, mine-less, desireless, Vasana-less, when he was one with the Father, when there was a joint family. And so he was absolutely fearless, and ever blissful and peaceful. He had no thought of body, house, property, wife, children, position and prestige. He had no thought of diseases of body and fall from his social status or prestige. He had no thought of enemies, war, riots and of running to any place for safety, security. His original bode was peacefully secure and free from any sort of a danger and enemies. It was all one Brahman community. There was no Hindu-Muslim trouble there. There was no fear of attacks through bombs or torpedoes. It was an impregnable, invulnerable fortress. It was disease-proof, bomb-proof, earthquake-proof.
In his new, independent egoistic life, he became selfish, crooked, narrow, and mean-minded. He entertained low thoughts. He ever thought of flesh and pleasures of the flesh. He practiced the philosophy of flesh and preached the philosophy of flesh which is synonymous with "Pig-philosophy." Every day fears multiplied, as he was very much attached to his body, the bodies of wife, children, and to his house, property, etc.
Raga (attachment) is the long-standing associate of fear. Wherever there is Raga, there is fear. Fear and Raga co-exist. Man is attached to his wife. The body of his wife is his greatest pleasure-centre. So there is fear for him, fear of losing her, fear of her death, fear of her running away with another man, fear of her divorcing him, fear of her being displeased with him, etc. As he is attached to his children, house and property, he has fear of losing his house, property and children. He is drowned in sorrow and gets terrible shock if these objects are destroyed or lost. Hence Raga is the cause of fear. If there is no Raga, there is no fear. The first link in the chain of Raga is his attachment to his body. All kinds, of Raga start from this Raga to the physical body.
Lord Krishna says in His Gita: "Vitaragabhayakrodhah sthitadheer muniruchyate". "He who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of stable mind."
Abandon attachment through practice of non-attachment or Vairagya and attachment to the lotus feet of the Lord or fearless Brahman. All fears will vanish.
You are attached to a fountain-pen, walking stick, book, watch, towel, cloth. Fear slowly creeps in. There is fear of losing them. Always entertain the thought "All objects are illusory, perishable and pain-giving." You will have no attachment. Even if there is attachment, it will be mild. You can drive it away with slight thinking and discrimination.
Give up attachment to this body by identifying yourself with the bodiless, sexless, pure, all-pervading immortal Atman or Brahman. All sorts of fears and attachments will totally disappear. Assert, feel, recognize:
I am bodiless, immortal Soul or Brahman
I am sexless, all-pervading Atman
I am fearless Brahman
I am full of Vairagya now
There is no world at all
I alone exist
I am Deathless and Blissful
I am Absolute Brahman
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
OM OM OM
May you all be free from Fear and Raga! May you all be established in the fearless, (Abhaya, Nirbhaya) Brahman through the practice of courage and meditation on the fearless, immortal Brahman.
Know thy Self ~ Atman Nityananda
By knowing what we are not we can free ourselves from it and realise what we really are
The two main diseases of human mind is desire and pride which is also the  desire to be superior or special.
Desire for pleasure, power, superiority, fame, money, possessions are the main branches of desire.
Desire and egoism are one. The Desire-energy assumes the form of 'Iness' or egoism (the sense 'I am the body', a separate body-mind entity).
Like-dislike, attraction-repulsion, irritability, anger, anxiety, fear, impatience, exhilaration-depression, frustration, greed, attachment, jealousy are the primary modifications of desire.
An underline discontentment, uneasiness, incompleteness, not enough and boredom are the almost ever present emotional moods in us created by the desire-energy.
I am better, I can do it better, I am special, criticism, complaining, comparing, imaginary planning and scheming, calculating, dominating, controlling, the external circumstances prevent me to be happy and complete, it is better elsewhere but not here, are the ways that egoism thinks and acts.
The others are friends or enemies depending on their position or attitude towards us. If they contribute to fulfil our desires and enhance our illusory self-image we love them and if not we are angry with them or we hate them.
Ego wants to control everything in order to feel secure and safe and secure the fulfilment of desires.
Ego is reactive and repetitive. Reacts always with the same emotional and mental patterns like a computer.
Incoherence, inresponsibility, hypocrisy, justifications are characteristics of ego behaviour.
We have to observe ourselves from moment to moment even during the most ordinary moments of our every day life (like for example the time we wash our teeth) in order to discover all these egoic tendencies. We cannot free ourselves from something we ignore.
Observation and discovery are first steps. Disidentification and comprehension are the next. Dissolution is the last.
Once we are aware of a mental or emotional pattern we must disidentify from it, we must by conscious attention, discrimination and  reflexion realize that we are not these mental emotional forms, that they prevent us live in peace, happiness and unity with the Divine and our fellows. And finally we must dissolve them with the power of divine mother by prayer and the repetition of name of God.
Self-awareness, self-observation, discovery, disidentification, discrimination, dispassion, prayer, Japa nama,  reflection, comprehension, concentration and meditation are the means that enable us free ourselves from ego and realize God consciousness.
Never forget God ~ Arman Nityananda
Never forget God
Forgetting your Self and God is real death. Bondage and suffering come due to forgetfulness and inattention.
Forgetfulness leads to identification, attachment and the development of egoism and desires for sensual pleasures, which are the womb of delusion, suffering and diseases.
Do not spent your energy and time to illusory sense pleasures which always bring you in a state of separation, incompleteness and discontentment.
Death is waiting you every moment; tomorrow never comes.
Live every moment of your life for God-realization; seek the eternal beauty of divine peace and bliss, the abode of immortality!
Repeat the name of God, breath the name of God, sing the name of God, hear the name of God, adore the name of God; thus you will never forget God.
God and his name are one. Japa nama purifies your heart and your mind, leads to meditation and the realization of God. The realization of peace, love and bliss eternal !
THE PRACTICE and BENEFITS of JAPA NAMA by Swami Sivananda
(repetition of a mantra of  the name of God)
·         Japa gives the highest peace.
·         Japa gives liberation,
·         Japa develops love.
·         Japa unites the devotee with God.
·         Japa brings God consciousness.
·         Japa brings eternal bliss.
WHAT IS JAPA ?
Repetition of any Mantra or Name of the Lord is known as Japa. Japa is an important Anga of Yoga. It is a spiritual food for the hungry soul. Japa is the rod in the hand of the blind Sadhakas (aspirants) to plod on the road to Realization. Japa is the philosopher's stone or divine elixir that makes one God-like. In this iron age, practice of Japa alone can give eternal Peace, Bliss and Immortality.
Japa is repetition of the Mantra. Dhyana is meditation on the form of the Lord with His attributes. There is meditation or Dhyana with Japa (Japa-Sahita-Dhyana); there is meditation or Dhyana without Japa (Japa-Rahita-Dhyana). In the beginning you should combine Dhyana with Japa. As you advance the Japa drops by itself; meditation only remains. It is an advanced stage. You can then practice concentration separately. You can do whatever you like best in this respect.
Name (Nama) and the object (Rupa) signified by the Name are inseparable. Thought and word are inseparable. Whenever you think of the name of your son, his figure stands before your mental eye, and vice versa. Even so when you do Japa of Rama, Krishna or Christ, the picture of Rama, Krishna or Christ will come before your mind. Therefore Japa and Dhyana go together. They are inseparable.
Do the Japa with feeling. Know the meaning of the Mantra. Feel God's presence in everything and everywhere. Draw closer and nearer to Him when you repeat the Japa. Think He is shining in the chambers of your heart. He is witnessing your repetition of the Mantra as He is the witness of your mind.
PRACTICAL AIDS TO JAPA
1. Select any Mantra or Name of God, preferably that given to you by your Guru, and repeat it from 108 to 1,080 times daily (one to ten malas).
2. Always keep your Guru-Mantra a secret. Never disclose it to anyone.
3. It is better to stick to one Mantra only. See Lord Krishna in Rama, Shiva, Durga, Gayatri and in everyone.
4. Get up at 4a.m. and do Japa for two hours. The early morning period (Brahmamuhurta) and dusk is the most favourable time for Japa and meditation. This is when Sattva (purity or steadiness) is predominant.
5. Take a bath or wash your hands, feet, face and mouth before sitting for Japa in the morning. At other times this is not necessary. Do Japa whenever you have leisure, at the three junctions of the day - morning, noon and evening - and before going to bed.
6. Face east or north during the practice. This enhances the efficacy of the Japa. Spread a piece of cloth over it. This conserves body-electricity. Sit in a separate meditation room or in any suitable place, such as a temple, on a river bank or under a banyan or peepul tree.
7. Maintain a steady pose. Attain mastery of the posture. You must be able to sit in Padmasana, Siddhasana or Sukhasana for three hours at a strech.
8. Reslove to complete a certain minimum number of malas before leaving your seat.
9. Recite some prayers before starting the Japa.
10. A rosary is a whip to goad the mind towards God. Use a rudraksha or tulsi mala of 108 beads.
11. Do not allow the mala to hang below the navel.
12. The mala must not be visible to you or to others. Cover it with a towel or handkerchief, which must be clean and washed daily.
13. Use the middle finger and the thumb of the right to roll the beads. The use of the index finger is prohibited.
14. Do not cross the meru while rolling the beads. Turn back when you come to it.
15. Sometimes do the Japa without a mala. Use a watch.
16. Do mental Japa for a time. When the mind wanders, do the Japa aloud, or whisper the Mantra for some time and come back to mental Japa again as soon as possible.
17. When you repeat the Mantra, have the feeling or mental attitude that the Lord is seated in your heart, that purity or Sattva is flowing from the Lord into your mind, that the Mantra is purifying your heart, destroying desires, cravings and evil thoughts.
18. Do not do the Japa in a hurried manner, like a contractor who tries to finish his work in a short time. Do it slowly with feeling, one-pointedness of mind and single-minded devotion.
19. Pronounce the Mantra distinctly and without any mistakes. Repeat it neither too slowly nor too fast. Increase the speed only when the mind wanders.
20. Be vigilant and alert during Japa. Stand up when sleep tries to overpower you.
21. Try to associate the Japa with the rhythm of the breath and meditate in the form of your Deity. Keep a picture or idol of the Deity in front of you. Think of the meaning of the Mantra while repeating it.
22. Regularity in Japa Sadhana is most essential if success is to be achieved. Sit in the same place and at the same time every day.
23. Do not beg for any worldly objects from God while doing Japa. Feel that your heart is being purified and that the mind is becoming steady by the power of the Mantra and the Grace of the Lord.
24. Observe silence and avoid distractions, calls and engagements.
25. It is important not to leave the place at once after the Japa is over and mix with everyone or plunge into worldly activity. Sit very quietly for at least ten minutes, humming some prayer, remembering the Lord and reflecting upon His infinite love. Then, after devout prostration, leave the place and commence your routine duties and activities. In this way the spiritual vibrations will remain intact.
26. Continue the current of Japa mentally at all times, whatever be the activity in which you are engaged. Carry on your Sadhana with tenacity and perseverance, without a break. Realize the glorious goal of life and enjoy supreme bliss.
