CONSCIOUS FREEDOM - Atman Nityananda

 CONSCIOUS FREEDOM
Self-realization in practice

Without to silent the mind (to still the mind, to make it Serene and tranquil) deep meditation is impossible. Without deep meditation, liberation and self-realization is also impossible

If you want to deepen and advance in meditation and also you want to understand the workings of your mind and eliminate the egoic patterns from your psych you have to spend a lot of time practicing in solitude.

You have to talk a little because talking externalizes and hypnotizes the mind.
You must be alert and vigilant and self-aware moment to moment. You must constantly observe what happens inside you, observing every emotion, thought, belief, opinion, attitude etc. that is expressed in you. You must clarify what really is to be self-aware and deepen into this.

You must disidentify of thoughts and emotions, likes and dislikes the pleasant and the unpleasant. To achieve this you have to pay attention consciously to the psychological traits and at the same time to remain aware of the silent space within. That requires an extraordinary alertness. It is necessary to try it again and again, moment to moment, and also to do many hours of practices such as meditation, japa nama (repeating mantras), conscious breathing etc.

It is of great importance to practice in sacred places in which the presence of divine vibrations is very strong as well as in nature because the pure vibrations will help you to calm and purify the mind. You will be able more easily to raise your level of self-awareness. The vibrations will permeate your mind and your vital body and will give you strength to practice more effectively in the city where the energies are low, dense and demonic.

You have to investigate (enquire) time and again the state of identification (which is a waking dream) and the state of self-awareness and deepen in this. This is a long process; you have to develop self-awareness and stop identifying with the egoic self.  You must find out what helps you to stay more alert and self-aware and what prevents you to be so. You must discover how identification happens and how you can prevent the identification with the thought-streaming and the emotions.

You must invent your own ways to remember to be self-aware and stop identification with the mind when you are working or interacting.

Above all, it is necessary to be highly motivated to do all this with enthusiasm, perseverance and infinite patience. If you do so success is assured; there is no question about this because the whole universe is going to help you, because what you do is in harmony with the divine will and for the good of all.

Peace, love, harmony

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE - Atman Nityananda

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

Spirituality is not a way to enjoy better our 'life', ie., to enjoy in a better way the pleasures that are derived from the sense objects. Spirituality has to do with the death of our 'life'.

Spirituality has to do with the death of desires, likes and dislikes, of wanting and don’t wanting, of preferring and don’t preferring, of attraction and repulsion, etc., which constitute what we call as ego.

Spirituality has to do with the abandonment of sense-pleasures* for the sake of the enjoyment of peace, freedom and eternal bliss of the spirit.

Truly, it is not possible to enjoy at the same time both, the bliss of the spirit and the sense-pleasure because the former is possible with a pure mind and the later with an impure passionate mind and also because they dwell in different places. The bliss divine lies in the heart and the pleasure in the senses and the sensual mind. If our attention dwells in the senses we cannot enjoy the bliss of the spirit and on the contrary if our attention dwells in the silent space within our heart we cannot enjoy the sense pleasures.

We have to choose between the eternal bliss and the temporal pleasure which is the womb of suffering; we have to choose between the illusion and the truth.

Jesus Christ said:
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
Money has no valid in itself, it is only a mean to fulfill our desires.
NOTEsense-pleasures*:
Sensual pleasure and the enjoyment of the sense objects are two different things. The sensual pleasure is the result of the projection of lusty passionate energy (which is crystallized in our astral body and it is related to rajas guna) on the sensory object we experience, while the enjoyment of an object is the natural experience of the pleasant sensation which is caused by the interaction of the mind with object through the particular sense. When for example we eat a chocolate we can experience both, the pleasant sensation and pleasure which is caused by the lusty ego by identification, projection and superimposition or we can experience only the pleasant sensation if our mind is free from lust and passion.

Sensual pleasure
When our mind is in contact with the sense objects or when our mind imagines the sense objects, the vital-ego projects on them its lusty passionate energy and gives us the experience of pleasure and satisfaction. This passionate energy clouds our power of discrimination and thus we fail to realize that the pleasure has nothing to do with the object itself. Thus we become attached to the object seeking to repeat the same experience in order to experience the same pleasure again and again.  The lusty passionate vital-ego (rajasic ego) is seeking continuously pleasure because it is made of the pleasure of past experiences. This lusty vital-ego is what Dr. Freud called as Id. This passionate energy assumes the form of like-dislike and desire and it is what deludes us and prevents us to realize our true nature and enjoy the peace and bliss divine.

Due to this passionate vital-energy the moment we experience a sense object, a vasana (subtle desire) for this object is created in our subconscious. This desire becomes a tendency in the subconscious mind and compels us to seek and experience the same object again and again in order to experience pleasure. By repetition of the same pleasure attachment is developed, which can take the form of addiction when it is very strong. Due to the vital-ego our mind is occupied daily by thoughts about the objects that give us pleasure as well as pleasant sensations and comfort. The vital-ego (which is essentially lust and desire) assumes also the form of the lower emotions of anger, fear, disappointment, impatience, anxiety, greed, agony, etc. which cause in us the psychological suffering.

The only pleasure which is not a product of projection is the sexual pleasure. When we excite the sexual energy then we naturally experience pleasure. However a lusty passionate mind ads to the natural sexual pleasure an imaginary pleasure by projection and imagination. This is more obvious in the sexual dreams in which we experience an imagined sexual pleasure by dreaming sexual scenes.  The lusty vital-ego has been created by the sexual pleasure with orgasm. According the gunas there is the sattvic way to experience sexual pleasure as well as the rajasic and the tamasic which is related with sexual perversions.

The enjoyment of objects, is something different from the pleasure. When our mind is free from the passionate lusty energy (predominates the sattva guna in the mind) then when we experience the sense objects, we experience their qualities and some kind of pleasant or unpleasant sensations. There is natural detachment and dispassion from the sensory experience.
The sensory experience, in which the lusty ego-energy is not engaged, doesn't create pleasure, attachment and desire. The very moment that the sense-experience finishes we forget the experience and we are totally focused in the present moment. There can be a preference to some kind of food for example but the absence of this food doesn't cause any suffering in our mind. Our mind is free from attachment and worldly thoughts and rejoices always the peace and ananda of our true nature.

The difference of experience of a pure sattvic mind and an impure mind in relation with sense objects is this:

1. A pure mind is detached
from the experience and the object itself and experiences with clarity the qualities of sense objects together with the pleasant or unpleasant sensations.

2. The impure mind identifies with the object and experiences the qualities of sense objects together with the pleasant or unpleasant sensations (without the clarity of the pure mind) and plus pleasure, which is the product of the passionate energy crystallized in our astral body.

Om! Anger and its elimination Part I / by Atman Nityananda

Anger and its elimination Part I / by Atman Nityananda

Anger is a strong rajasic emotion. Anger is distorted vital energy crystallized in the astral body. Anger is a modification of desire or passion.

Anger is only a modification of desire, that`s why anger arises when a desire or a `need` is not met. Anger arises when something or someone prevents us to do or to accomplish what we want, to get what we want or what we wish and what we like.

‘’Desire (kama) is the mother of all emotions.’’ ~ Swami Rama

“When a man’s desire is not gratified and when someone stands in the way of its fulfillment, the man becomes angry. The desire gets transformed into anger.

Anger is only a modification or form of desire. Anger is desire itself. All evil qualities and actions proceed from anger.”

~Swami Sivananda

"Desire" itself, under certain circumstances, gains expression as "anger."

~ Swami Chinmayananda

Anger also arises when there is conflict of desires, of needs and opinions among people, whether couples, friends, family etc.. Anger arises when we think that someone diminishes our self-image, when reject us or we think that reject us, when does not or we think that doesn`t accept us (do not accept or reject our opinions, body image, life style, preferences in various things, our religion, etc.,). This happens because we want or we need (our mind is conditioned to do so) recognition and acceptance.

The intensity of expression of anger depends on the intensity of desire. Τhe stronger is the desire or the attachment (attachment is a child of desire) we have for something, the more powerful is the anger as well as the fear to lose or not to get what we want.

Anger is directed against something or someone; it is against him (or whatever) who opposes our desires and needs. Anger attacks with words, gestures and actions of violence. Anger wants to harm anyone who is an obstacle to our desires. Anger also attacks ourselves when we do something that prevents the fulfillment of a desire.

Anger clouds the mind and intellect, our capacity of reasoning and discernment and forces us to say or do things that we regret when anger subsides.

The company anger is fear, guilt and depression.

When there is a desire the psychological process unfolds this way: First comes the impulse of desire which impels us to fulfill it; we think and plan how we can get and enjoy the desired object; we probably have expectations and we imagine how it will be when we get what we want. Imagination, projection and superimposition are always the ways that desire works.

Along with the desire we may have doubts and anxiety (if we manage at the end to get or accomplish what we want); these doubts and anxiety are only expressions of fear.

If anyone or anything prevents us fulfill our desire then desire transforms itself as anger and attacks him that is an obstacle of our desire. If desire is fulfilled, the emotions of anger, anxiety, fear, impatience etc. subside temporarly and we experience pleasant sensations, pleasure or happiness according the nature of the desired object and the circumstances. If the desire is not fulfilled the desire transforms as disappointment, frustration, dissatisfaction, resentment, displeasure, depression. Very intense anger or acumulated anger becomes hatred.

In the case that we had expressed our anger towards someone, when anger subsides then we regret about what we said or we did against him and possibly can arise in us the emotion of guilt. In the guilt phase, the ego in order to overcome the inner conflict puts into action its defenses, known to Dr. Freud as defense mechanisms. Two of them is to accuse the others or to justify ourselves.

Another mechanism to compensate the discomfort we feel (after an anger episode) is to find some pleasant or pleasurable experience. We seek something to distract our mind from the inner and outer situation we are at those moments. But by doing so we avoid to confront and resolve our psychological disfunction, we remain unconscious of the mental pattern, the need or the desire that is behind the anger and we also accumulate in our energy field more anger energy that will arise again in the future in similar situations. In other words we become victims of what we negate to see and recognize in us.

Do not forget that almost all psychological conflicts begin with desire, continues with fear and anger and end with depression, disappointment, frustration, dissatisfaction, resentment, and guilt. So all this process is only an expansion of desire itself and the above mentioned emotions are modifications or transformations of desire itself.

Remember also that what the ego wants to survive, to protect its image and overcome the inner conflict and suffering, (which are due to the emotions of inferiority, insecurity, low self-esteem and self-image, low self-confidence, need for acceptance and recognition etc.) creating and using various kinds of defend mechanisms. These mechanisms `work` to some extent but in the long run cause mental and emotional conditioning, unbalance, suffering and alienate us more and more from our true nature.

Passion is the root and anger the stem. First you have to destroy the root (passion), then the stem (anger) will die by itself. A passionate man is more angry. ~ Swami Sivanada

Consequences of anger

Anger keeps us entrapped in low vibrations and thus we cannot experience the peace, harmony and the joy of Being.

Anger destroys the harmony between couples, friends, families, partners, teams, countries, nations. We do things without being able later to change their harmful results. We hurt ourselves and others, as well as our physical and psychological health and that of others.

Anger drains a lot of vital energy (psychic and physical prana) and unbalances the energy flow and the three doshas, especially Vata and Pitta. So after an episode of anger we may feel tired or have a headache, stomach pain, etc. (About the results of anger in the body read here Anger and Bodily sensations).

When we are angry we take wrong decisions that affect us and our fellows.

When the anger we express towards a person accumulates in us it becomes hatred.

The ultimate goal is to eliminate anger
It is certain that the goal is not only to control the anger but to eliminate this energy and free our mind and the field of energy from this poison of anger-energy.

The process we follow to eliminate the anger-energy is the same we follow with all other egoic tendencies or negative emotions with slight differentiations.

Prayer, japa-mantra, repetetion of the names of God, disidentification, self-inquiry, meditation, increasing Sattva Guna and reducing Rajas and Tamas in our mind, visualization with conscious breathing, purification of the 49 subconscious levels, the development of opposite virtues (love, peace, compassion ..), Bach flowers, the pranic healing, reiki etc., are some of the ways or the methods we can use to eliminate gradually the energy of anger.

Remember that anger is only a modification of desire, that`s why we have to enquire what desire or `need` is behind the anger in each situatition and eliminate it with proper means.

"The root cause of anger is ignorance and egoism. The egoism must be eliminated through Atma-Vichara (self-enquiry). Only then one can control his anger completely. By developing the opposing virtues like forgiveness (Ksama), love , peace (Shanti), compassion (Karuna), friendship, etc., anger can be controlled to a great extent. Its strength can be reduced. "

"Only the realization of the Atman (Atma-jnana) can fry the seeds of the impressions (Samskaras) of anger for not re-sprout, and thus eradicate them completely."

~ Swami Sivananda
